Since ancient times, a stable civilization could only subsist if it were able to take advantage of the earth and its weather. Agriculture heavily depended upon the cycling of seasons to grow food and therefore, if one could not adapt to the different phases of weather, he or she would simply not survive. Subsequently, this way of life and agriculture ultimately united people and led to the formation of agrarian societies. Essentially, the ability to harvest food meant the ability to live. Consequently, seasons naturally became symbolically associated with life since it was directly tied to farming and food. This is mainly due the fact that winter and the “cold weather symbolizes troubles. . . [and] extreme difficulty” (Mncube 132). For instance, Cummings’ writes in his poem that his father would “laugh and build a world with snow” (line 48). Though winter is directly referenced, this line of imagery depicts that the father is further aging. However, this playful and innocent image shows that the he isn’t particular afraid of his inevitable demise, considering that he can build a world with something that represents death. The completion of this cycle of life is also shown in “The Swimmer,” when winter arrives, which is “probably the first time in [Neddy’s] life that he had ever cry . . . [and felt] miserable, cold, tired, and bewildered” (Cheever 11). Furthermore, unlike in the summertime when he could swim with ease, Neddy now “staggered with fatigue . . . and paddled the length of the pool, stopping again and again with his hand to rest” (12). Based on this on this particular image and the physical distress in his movements, it can be seen that that the cycle of seasons has reached completion – symbolizing the end of Neddy’s happy life.
