The United States began using drones in the early 1900s during World War I. Since then, drone use has elevated on the domestic front and the aircrafts are easier to produce due to advances in manufacturing techniques. The ease of building drones has caused people outside the government and military, such as private companies and civilians, to use them. With the increased use of drones comes the legal opinions of drones; some consider them a step in the right direction for the country while others think their use is an invasion of privacy and an example of the government overstepping their boundaries. Drones, as defined from Opposing Viewpoints on “Drones,” says they are “…unmanned, armed aircrafts used by the military for surveillance and air strikes.” This may be the case for foreign use of drones, but drones also have important uses in the domestic theater. Drones monitor farming, security at large events, oil spills, real estate, and assist in delivery services. Since drones began operating in the United States, people have come to believe that drones should have restrictions in order for their Fourth Amendment Rights to be protected; people are worried about the government invading their private life. The government has taken action in order to preserve citizens’ liberties by requiring drones to meet Certificates of Authorization in order to fly in national air space. Unlike domestic drones, military drones can be used for spying and killing terrorists such as Osama bin Laden, which helps to fight the War on Terror. Throughout the recent United States’ history, drones have played a vital role in the foreign theater of operations. Though they began primarily as military aids, their role has expanded to domestic use as well. This domestic use brings the legality of drones into question and many people have strong and differing opinions on how drones and their utilization within the continental US should be regulated. Regardless of opinion, drones have proven a worthy weapon and strategic tool to accomplish a wide variety of purposes.
