In the aftermath of World War 2, the United Nations, a byproduct of an international attempt to form a peaceful foreground, immediately laid down peaceful treaties and procedures to unite great nations together. Two years into the United Nations' inception, the major superpowers in the world, the United States and the Soviet Union, already formed climactic tensions and began an arms race of military, technological, and economical advancements. Cold, defined because of the lack of large-scale fighting between the Eastern Bloc, Soviet Union and the Western Bloc, the United States. Already disappointing its foundations and policies, the initial decades of development for the United Nations were stagnating. The Cold War had brought the world at risk of potential outbreak of a nuclear war, and destroyed any confirmations of a globally peaceful society. What would ultimately result in branching wars, such as the Korean War between South and North Korean governmental dictatorship, and the Vietnam War, the Cold War began numerous conflicts in the globe. Including the Space Race, Bay of Pigs Invasion, Cuban Missile Crisis, the Berlin Crisis, and Suez Crisis, the United Nations was often an unsuccessful organization, failing to meet its founding principles in the context of the Cold War. However, with the development of Peacekeeping in 1950, the symbolic “Blue Helmets” went into action during the 1956 Suez Crisis. In addition, the UN mediated the Berlin Crisis through negotiations between the USA and Soviet union, in 1949, ending the blockade that caused the crisis. While the United Nations aided in the prevention of a massive nuclear war, however, by 1993, 2 years after the War's negotiated end, the UN witnessed major relief of the passing...

...ractices of other branches of power that the UN cannot grasp upon. In contrast, the virtues of the UN remain undeniably consistent throughout history, but the powers and legislative action the organization fluctuates due to the constant uprising of conflict. However, throughout the history of the 20th century and post Cold – War conflict, the organization's extensiveness has increased, such through the actions of the Non-proliferation treaty of nuclear weapons, and the ongoing tasks of UN Peacekeeping missions. These actions reflected upon the UN fiasco of the Cold War, demonstrate the emerging “politico-economic” society, by laying a prodigious impact of the world via its numerous stretches of the organization.
Nonetheless, the UN legacy throughout the Cold War was the ideal of a surmising, effective organization that could meet the standards of the new century.
A third character, the Ambassador Gilbert MacWhite, is a patriotic diplomat who lives up to many of the SOF Imperatives, but fails at one. His intent is admirable and the Ambassador realizes the actions required to combat the communist threat. One of the SOF Imperatives that he abides by is to ensure the legitimacy and credibility of Special Operations. ADRP 3-05 defines this as “legitimacy is the most crucial factor in developing and maintaining internal and international support. The United States cannot sustain its assistance to a foreign power without this legitimacy.” The publication also elaborates that decisions and actions that comply with U.S. and international laws foster legitimacy and credibility. This concept ties into several
How did the historical facts change Peacekeeping operations before and after the cold war? History
Final Paper - Analysis of the United Nations Of the many non-profit institutions, the United Nations is possibly the most prevalent and influential. The United Nations is an authority, extending influence over numerous countries, as well as garnering power and support from them. It began as a replacement, just after the end of the Second World War on the 24th of October, for the League of Nations. This ineffective organization’s flaws were due to it’s leadership by two of Europe’s most destroyed countries- France and England. These two diminished powers were unable to deploy their massacred armies or create trade restrictions.they instead relied on moral condemnation, which could mostly go ignored.
On October 24, 1945 the United Nations was established as a means of preserving global peace after the Second World War. Launching with 51 member states the organizations began on a healthy platform with the United States having an active role in its promotion of international co-operation. However, during the cold war the organization began to experience a plethora of new challenges which primarily involved armed conflicts throughout the world. It soon became apparent that to maintain the peace and effectively deal with dangerous conflicts, the member states would be required to go beyond the Security Council. In 1956 the UN implemented the Peace Process Initiative as a means to ambitiously combat the Suez Crisis, thus creating the world’s first peacekeeping force. With this being the first peacekeeping mission ever deployed by the United Nations, it was met with a significant learning curve as many of the soldiers were given dated equipment, and did not have the means to maintain stability due to lack of funds from each of their respective member states. Though there has been a significant evolution of peacekeeping, with many new monitoring functions, the UN has yet to incorporate technologies into its operations thus far. As observers, technology allows for coverage to be made at a safe distance, providing a greater means of information and security for peacekeeping forces and civilian personnel. Technology can also aid in the progression of peacekeeping operations, as monitoring technologies allow for greater observation, while helping to diminish a feeling of intrusiveness. To advance peacekeeping, operations must be provided with the appropriate technological assets in order to effectively maintain peace throughout the world...
The UN was formed for the principle of advocating and maintaining international peace and security, which combines many responsibilities to re- picture the world in a new reasonable way. Tim Dunne describes United Nations as “a multi-purpose agency directed to specific goals including collective security, peace-keeping, health, environmental and human rights concerns” (Dunne, 2007, p.103). Provided that the UN is a ‘multi-purpose’ organization, it will be improper to explain its contribution to the international scene centered on a specific objective; therefore this paper will present a description of UN and its activities, followed by an empirical assessment of Realism in United Nations peacekeeping. The closing section will portray a perspective of the IR theory that is relevant to the UN role in maintaining peace and security.

States such as North and South Korea maintain extremely poor relations over a war that occurred over 50 years ago, North and South Sudan are still at odds over the separation and independence of the south from the north in 2011 and in Israel and Palestine there has been ongoing low levels of fighting since 1967 when Israel absorbed Palestine into their nation, all of which the UN seems powerless to stop. The UN has had its greatest success achieving aims in areas not associated with international peace and security, such as eradicating polio in Africa or helping disaster-stricken nations. This is because the UN has been able to operate in response to these issues through means such as the General Assembly, which is less influenced by the national interests of the big five nations. This has allowed the UN to circumnavigate the power of veto of these nations, which has restricted UN interventions in response to threats to international peace and security, as seen in Crimea or Syria.
The United Nations and NATO are two organizations in this world that are working extremely hard to accomplish their goals, one step at a time. Maybe someday, the world will be a peaceful place and well have the United Nations and The North Atlantic Organization to thank for it.
During the late 1940’s, tensions between the USA and the USSR started to become more serious. This was a clear threat for the UN, as it drastically challenged its ability to pursue its charter in a wholesome and meaningful way. The USA and the USSR were at the core of the organization and these tensions meant they would not be willing to cooperate and thus it would hinder the ...
The Cold War (1945-1991) was a substantial war that was fought on an. economic, philosophical, cultural, social and political level. This impacted globally and changed the majority of the world’s societies to a. liberated fashion, rather than the archaic and conservative ways. Global war is a war engaged in by all if not most of the principle nations of the world, a prime example of such would be of the two great wars. Therefore the cold war can’t be classified as a global war in terms of the military and actual warfare’s, as the two superpowers (Soviet Union and USA) fought indirectly with each other, however to an extent the cold war can be said it’s a global war in terms of its politics and economics. 1. As far as peace keeping methods go, the reputation of the United Nations is very pitiable. This is not only because they have not been doing their job to it’s fullest extent, but also because the member states on the security council haven’t given the UN the power it needs if it is to be a successful force in peace keeping methods.

Fifty-one countries established the United Nations also known as the UN on October 24, 1945 with the intentions of preserving peace through international cooperation and collective security. Over the years the UN has grown in numbers to include 185 countries, thus making the organization and its family of agencies the largest in an effort to promote world stability. Since 1954 the UN and its organizations have received the Nobel Peace Prize on 5 separate occasions. The first in 1954 awarded to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Geneva, for its assistance to refugees, and finally in 1988 to the United Nations Peace-keeping Forces, for its peace-keeping operations. As you can see, the United Nations efforts have not gone without notice.
