The ultimate question, why does poverty exist? Poverty can be measured in two ways. It can be measured by absolute poverty and by relative poverty (Author). Absolute poverty is about the goods and services. Relative poverty looks at needs (Author). There are many reason why poverty exists. It exists local, nationally and internationally. There are problems with people obtaining education, obtaining jobs and just with money in general. There are ways to improve the quality of life of the poor and in this essay they will be laid out. The idea of the federal government’s measurement of US poverty was developed by one single person. This idea was developed by Mollie Orshansky in the early 1960’s. Poverty was first determined by the amount of food families received (Author). Poverty on the national level is said to be caused by education, health, and crime (Author). “Impoverished families tend to have less education, more health problems and less access to nutritionally adequate food” (Author). The author in from the US poverty article argues that one is more likely to achieve a more secure economic future when they have a more advanced education (Author). Skills and knowledge are needed for any job or career. When it comes to health influencing poverty, this is meant that poor people don’t often have the opportunity to get medical assistance. This leads to them being at higher risk for disease and mortality rates, which therefore makes their income lesser and economic future less bright (Author). There are many government programs that were made to help the poor. They include but are not limited to: Head Start, Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, Job Corps, National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs and Family Planning Services
Undisputedly poverty has been one of the major persistent social problems in the United States for hundreds of years. Poverty does not discriminate against Caucasians, African-Americans, Hispanics, Jews, homosexuals, heterosexuals, age, gender, or persons with disabilities. Poverty can strike any population, community, ethnic group, and family. According to the U.S Census Bureau, 43.6 million people were in poverty in 2009 which was an increase from 2008. There are multiple causes of why a family or individual can fall into poverty, which includes but not limited to, disability, unemployment, age, and recessions, as for which we have seen through the 2008 recession and the Great Depression. Throughout this paper I will address poverty as a social problem and its causes. I will also focus on how children and family households headed by single mothers are effected by poverty, and how Temporary Assistance for Needy Families came about to help children and families in poverty.
Poverty is the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support. Research has shown that poverty has been existent since before time. Nearly half of all Americans between 60 and 90 will encounter at least one year of poverty (Martin 1). The contributing factors of poverty in Americans, ages 54-64, are lack of jobs that pay adequate wages which include fast food jobs that most teens get as a starter job, high cost of health care such as expensive nursing homes, rising costs of medicines, co-pays and treatments, the income gap between the rich and the poor, good jobs in areas where there is a lack of access to transportation, increased economic globalization, and lack of inexpensive child care for single women, and for elders who take care of their grand children, and some causes of poverty can simply be the result of making bad decisions, such as drug abuse,gamb...
There are no simple explanations on what the causes of poverty are. The stereotypic explanation persists that the poor cause their own poverty. One of the problems is the unemployment. Firms these days are constantly searching for well educated, experienced, skilled and intelligent employees. The high unemployment rate is because of the lack of education given to poor people. When given the chance, most of the people living under poverty will do the best they can to earn enough money to support their families. Poverty is also due to high housing costs. These days, the price of houses are getting higher and higher and soon most people won’t be able to afford a place to live in, let alone food to eat or water to drink.
How can there be so much misery and insecurity in the midst of such abundance? One of the first things we see is that poverty doesn’t exist all by itself. It is simply one end of an overall distribution of income and wealth in society as a whole. Poverty is both a structural aspect of the system and consequence of how the system is organized and how people participate in it.
“Poverty is the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possession” (“Poverty”). Throughout history, poverty has been a debilitating social issue that has negatively impacted people and societies. Numerous programs and initiatives dating back centuries have attempted to solve poverty yet it still remains an issue. There are many strategies that help combat or minimize poverty. We will look at how government legislation and social aid programs have impacted poverty and also the factors that ultimately place people in poverty.
The 2008 documentary The End of Poverty? is a film that focuses around global poverty and how it became the tragedy that it is today. Poverty was created by acts of military conquest, slavery and colonization that led to the confiscation of individual’s property and forced labor. However, today the problem remains because wealthy countries who take advantage of developing third world countries. In 2014, the United Census Bureau recorded that 46.7 million people or almost 15 percent of people in the United States lived in poverty, struggling to survive every single day. Furthermore, 21.1 percent of the U.S. population under the age of 18 begins their lives below the national poverty line (Census, “Poverty”). These people, the ones who do not have sufficient resources to prosper, arguably have one of the largest problems in America. Due to government regulations, communities’ inability to adjust to new surroundings and the lack of education, poverty has reached hundreds of thousands of individuals, causing an increasing number of people to experience health problems and even death. Instead of watching the percentage of poverty grow
All over the world, differences, between the wealthy and the poor, are obvious and everlasting. Fewer people are becoming rich and larger numbers of people are growing poorer, leading to poverty as a global problem. This leads us to question as to why some people live below the poverty line and some live in the extreme luxuries of life. To begin with, poverty is very difficult to define. However, it is a condition where the basic needs of mankind, namely food, clothing and shelter, are not met.
Poverty is defined as the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount. According to this definition, it is appropriate to view capitalism as a socially harmonious economic system in which unemployment, poverty, and inequality are the fault of the individual. Poverty or being poor along with being rich is a state of mind in which capitalism has no affect on. Those who are poor by American terms do not see themselves as being poor. They may only begin to “feel” poor when they are told that they are poor. This action changes their state of mind and alters their view on living.
Poverty is a major issue in most societies around the world. Poverty is when people live with fewer sources than an average person, who live in a decent home with a car and family that he love and care for, besides that poverty also is not just about financial and physical things, it includes emotional breakdown, like feeling hungry, frustrated, tired and hopeless through the year. Moreover, some countries have a high economic status, but they still face poverty somehow, it means countries that have no justice and have dictatorial system which called corruption. However, in some other countries people live naturally with poverty status such as Africa, Brazil and many more. Poverty has been rapidly increasing all over the world and it is a problem that is not being fought against. Many individuals have stated that the reason for this mass poverty increase is because of the refugee crisis and the social inequalities in the countries. In the article, it states that even with such high poverty rates many countries are currently trying to resolve this issue. I believe this article is directed towards the wealthier and more fortunate countries such as the UK where the article was originated from. However, this article can also be directed towards the developing

It has become the biggest global issue because it involves a big percentage of the population.
Poverty in America is measured using thresholds and guidelines that are updated each year so that we have a more accurate picture of who is in need. Using these standards it is then decided who is impoverished. According to the Institute for Research on Poverty (2013) a family of four, who makes less than $23,492 in a year, are considered poor. There are numerous federal programs provided by the government that are designed to help those who are in need. Some of these programs provide food stamps, free lunches, Medicaid, Head Start, and rent assistance. Although these programs are helpful to people who need them they do not entirely prevent children from the consequences of being poor.
