Christians all over the world disagree on many topics relating to the life of Jesus among other biblical characters and the debate about which gospel was written first is no exception. Many Christian faiths today believe that the gospel according to Mark was the first book written and they use what is called the two document theory to explain their belief. There are many reasons to accept this hypothesis as truth, however there are many who still believe that the book of Matthew was written first and they site the two gospel theory which is also a very convincing argument. In the book The New Testament Methods and Meanings the authors Carter and Levine state quite a few reasons for Mark’s gospel being written before Matthew’s. According to Carter & Levine one of the reasons that Mark’s gospel was written prior to Mathew is because Matthew improves on Mark’s narrative (Levine & Carter, 20). According to Father Kenneth Baker, former professor at Seattle University and priest for the Society of Jesus, says that there is definitely a literary relationship between the three synoptic gospels, however Mark was influenced by Matthew and Luke’s writing. One of the reasons that Father Baker says that Matthew was most likely written first is because it was possibly written in Jerusalem in Hebrew and was written specifically for the Jews. He goes on to explain that Luke was written second but was not widely used because it made converting Gentiles difficult due to their lack of Old Testament knowledge which is frequently referenced in the book.
