This is a review of “The Thinker’s Guide to Analytic Thinking” by Dr. Linda Elder and Dr. Richard Paul (2007), Parts 1-4. The aim of this book is to demonstrate the importance of critical thinking and demonstrate how critical these skills are for students to master. Just like how we learned other skills and mastered them, we also need to learn to think critically. For example, we can master let’s say a problem until we memorize a problem, however if we master critical thinking then we have tools to analyze and provide solutions to other problems. As the authors Elder and Paul (2007) states that not many students have been thought to analyze (p.41). Part one of the book goes into discussing the importance of analytical thinking; addresses the eight elements that are present in all thinking; and the importance of intellectual standards and how to apply them. Every person thinks, we all have ideas, and opinions on everything we experience in life. The authors make it seem as we believe we are thinking in most cases, as we don’t have control of our lives especially in today’s society. As the authors mentioned in part one, students are not thought to analyze or to think critically. We cannot allow our fast pacing world and technology to think for us. We are an evolved species with a brain and we are smart to allow critical think to go away and allow others or technology to do that for us. We need to keep teaching critical thinking so ideas can continue to flow and for others to maintain their creativity. The authors are right by saying that “those who would develop analytic minds need guidance, instruction, and practice in monitoring their thinking using intellectual tools applicable to every discipline” (Elder & Paul, 2007, p. 639).
