Hamlet in Love Love is a complex human concept that is at the basis of many plots, as it causes a whirlwind of emotions and makes for interesting storylines. William Shakespeare is just one example of a playwright who uses love to create dramatic and intense plays. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, there is a small focus on the love story between the characters Hamlet and Ophelia. At the beginning of the play, readers are informed of Hamlet and Ophelia’s romantic relationship, but as the play progresses and develops, there are clear examples that prove their love is one-sided. During Ophelia’s funeral, her brother, Laertes, jumped into the grave as he mourned. Hamlet was disgusted by this and confronted Laertes in order to fight him. Despite his proclaimed love for Ophelia, he fought and yelled at her brother in her grave. He disturbed her funeral in order to defend his love for her, but there was no need for him to disrupt the funeral as he did. The funeral occurred in order to honour Ophelia’s life and Hamlet demeaned her death by starting an argument with her brother. Hamlet approached Laertes, who was mourning for the loss of his sister, and disrupted his grieving. “What is he whose grief / Bears such an emphasis …? This is I, / Hamlet the Dane.” (5.1.243-247) By Hamlet aggressively announcing his return, he took the attention off Ophelia’s death, refusing her a proper burial. In addition to stealing the attention, Hamlet made his love for her into a competition over who loved her most. “I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers / Could not with all their quantity of love / Make up my sum. What wilt thou do for her?” (5.1.261-263) He made the situation about his love for her, and not Ophelia herself, as he disregarded her. After Ophelia’s explanation, Polonius decided that Hamlet has gone mad. It can be assumed that this was Hamlet’s plan - to have the castle know of his antic disposition. This is because he had previously told his friends that he would start to act crazy, and then this scenario (where he did act crazy) was the next time he was mentioned. Hamlet, who can be presumed to be smart as he is a prince and therefore, educated, would have been smart enough to realize that Ophelia was very loyal to her father. He knew that Ophelia would tell her father of any events that occurred, so he manipulated this loyalty.
