Have you ever done something you instantly regretted, or given someone something they shouldn't have? Well in “The Monkey’s Paw” by WW Jacobs, A family gets a mummified monkey's paw, Anyone that holds it is able to have three wishes but they always turn up twisted. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, an undescribed person murders an old man while the narrator explains why the narrator thinks the narrator is sane, but is clearly crazy. Both writers use Tone and Symbolism to convey to make careful choices, in everything. WW Jacobs uses tone in multiple cases within “The Monkey’s Paw” to make the story sound creepy. One of these is in WW Jacobs story “The Monkey’s Paw” they stir empathy, it might not be the same for you but it's true for me. They do this when the author states, “ “I wish for two hundred pounds,” said the old man distinctly. A fine crash from the piano greeted his words, interrupted by a shuddering cry from the old man. His wife and son ran toward him.”(Jacobs 42) This for me stirs empathy. Because we know that something terrible will happen. The reason I didn’t label it with the reader knows more than the character, is because he had a hint of something bad happening since he was warned, but obviously didn’t believe what his friend had said. But, on the contrary, Edgar Allan Poe has a different approach to “The Tell-Tale Heart” where we haven’t, hopefully killed or murdered anyone, so we don’t feel very empathetic for the character. But the story is in first person which is clearly different than “The Monkey's Paw”. We know than in “The Tell-Tale Heart” it states, “...And Every night, about midnight, I turned the latch off his door and opened it --oh so gently! And then, when I had made an opening sufficient for my head I put in a dark lantern…”. When he writes “I” he is talking about himself which is a dead giveaway to first person. Both WW Jacobs and Edgar Allan Poe have a common theme which is The importance of making careful choices. In both stories the character doesn't listen to what he is being told or telling himself.
