Individuals develop their personal values and beliefs from a variety of sources. Major areas one gets ideas and values from is their parent, their society, and their culture. One way all three of these sources combine to instil certain values and beliefs in people is through oral storytelling. Listening to stories- oral or not- is a way people develop different thoughts, attitudes and beliefs; therefore, what theme or moral lessons a story has in very impactful on one's life. The author then goes on to use a short Native American story as an example of what he just explained. Bruchac is confirming that people indeed to develop some of their values and beliefs from stories. Of course these stories are from people's parent's, their society, and their culture. A story is just a simplified way of explaining a moral lesson to a person. Individual develop much of their values and beliefs through the society and culture around them. The values and beliefs one holds has great sway on their behavior and actions.
