In “13 chairs” by Dave Shelton, the characters calm and alert qualities contribute to the speaker’s message that it is better to be alert than calm in an undesirable situation. According to the text “So he holds a breath ...turns the handle, and goes in. (shelton 1) When he holds his breath he is trying to calm his mind to go into that supposedly vacant house, furthermore this fanstastic peice of evidence would be “Jack is alone now in a fragile pool of wavering light, staring out into the boundless dark as if he is ...floating in space”
(shelton 232), this shows that he is alert of his surroundings because he was the only one that had to tell a story and the other people were somewhere in the house. the evidence portrays that the character
In recent times, it has become very evident that wealth plays a major factor in the judicial system. There have been many cases that display the wealthy being given less of a punishment than the lower classes. In one particular case a teen, Ethan Couch, was driving under the influence after stealing beer from Walmart and he swerved off road, killing four pedestrians. The judge sentenced him to 10 years’ probation; this outraged many people because the usual punishment is a life sentence. Mr. Couch claims he suffers from “Affluenza”, which is a psychological problem that is caused by children being extremely privileged. Ethan Couch should not have received probation because of his family’s status, because he was driving under the influence,
Everyone wants to be “happy.” Everyone endeavors to fulfill their desires for their own pleasure. What makes this ironic is, the fact that most don‘t know what the actual definition of happiness is. “In Pursuit of Unhappiness” presents an argument, which states that not everyone will be happy. Darrin McMahon, the article’s author, explores the ways our “relentless pursuit of personal pleasure”(McMahon P.11;S.3) can lead to empty aspirations and impractical expectations, making us sad, and not happy. Rather than working to find the happiness of others, we should all focus on finding what makes ourselves happy. It is easier to find happiness in the little things
While reading “ Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, many opinions can be formed of Chris McCandless. One, in particular, was the author's opinion which he blatantly stated on page 85. He didn't think that Chris was some reckless foolish insane idiot. He believed that competent otherwise he wouldn't have lasted so long. I agree with Krakauer, things Chris did on this journey did not show signs of some careless person. Chris was just an adventurer looking to get away from the expectations society had of him to see the world for what it really was.
I assert that Armstrong successfully argues that mental states in humans are equivalent to brain states in humans by avoiding the main objections of behaviorism and justifying that all behaviors can be explained through methods of science.
Of course, when Betty Birner writes “[l]anguage will never stop changing; it will continue to respond to the needs of the people who use it” (source D) in her article, she disagrees, maintaining that so often as an individual utilizes a language based upon one’s individual experiences the dialect becomes true. She believes that as long as one can individually express themselves through the use of words, correct or not, the phrases automatically become unerring. However, the point so mentioned simply does not stand. A dialect cannot be considered correct if it fails to follow the rules of Standard English. The rules may have been set years ago; however, their necessity becomes apparent when one thinks of a language’s comprehensibility. For instance,
“Designated Survivor” is the second series of Kiefer Sutherland that is in perfect timing with Donald Trump’s win in the United States presidential election. The first was “24” which ran for eight seasons and have won Emmy Awards.
The 1920's was a time when cultural and social changes began to take place in the history of the United States. People began to grow in prosperity, change the rules when it came to morals and manners, and the cultural civil war of individual rights. This is the time when women are fighting for their rights to be equal in comparison to their white male counterparts. During this period women are realizing their impact on how society functions and the roles they play. This was the beginning of the true feminists’ mission. After “August 23, the day when the Tennessee legislature finally enacted the Federal suffrage amendment" (Eastman,
Twelve Angry Men, is a play written by Reginald Rose. The play is about the process of individuals and a court case, which is determining the fate of a teenager. It presents the themes of justice, independence and ignorance. Rose emphasises these three themes through the characters and the dialogue. Justice is the principle of moral rightness or equity. This is shown through juror number eight who isn’t sure whether or not the boy is actually innocent or guilty, but he persists to ask questions and convinces the other jurors to think about the facts first. Independence is shown through both juror number three and ten. They both believe that the defendant is guilty until they both realise that they can not relate there past experiences with the court case. Ignorance is shown throughout all the jurors during the play, it is also brought out through the setting of the play.
Officer Taylor’s thoughts on “those people” should not affect her decision-making skills. It is not fair to judge someone on the color of the skin or race. That thought process is garbage and needs to be fixed. At that point Officer Taylor’s mindset is not using facts. Officer Taylor wants to stop crime but locking the wrong person up doesn’t help anything. You must have evidence or probable cause. The definition I got off the Webster website says Evidence that gives someone a reason to think that a crime has been or is being committed. Officer Taylor is acting off suspicion.
In Anton Ashcroft’s article, he criticizes Donald Trump and ponders over this question: Is Trump a narcissist and psychopath or a representative of the people? Ashcroft uses evidence from Trump’s “colorful display of vitriol, inconsistencies, racism, and grandiose rhetoric”, which has caused the media to seize upon the possibility of a mental disorder in the president. The thought and belief of a person being a psychopath, with the evidence provided in this article, is well enforced. Evidence has been provided of how Trump’s behavior falls into the PCL:SV criteria for being a psychopath and narcissist. He has been irresponsible, refused to own up to mistakes and apologize, needed the people’s approval, and threatened to abuse his power. All
In this passage, the audience truly sees the meaning behind Herbert Kohl's message. His purpose for writing comes back to the fact that people interpret situations differently in every way. Kohl not only wanted to highlight the purpose behind wanting to learn something new but he also wanted readers to be aware that most time it does not come down to the inability of someone who doesn't want to learn but the real reason behind why they don't want to. People have different opinions on topics such as these but Kohl wanted to show that being able to want to stand up for your culture and the meanings behind it are rather important. Behind Kohl's purpose for writing, we see an insight into his past life relating to Wilfredo's. Kohl's reason for
However in the back of his mind he was thinking if he could trust the man or not but Jack’s suspicion overtook him like it always does and he just stayed in his position in the alley way.
To create a formidable article, authors have a way of arranging the facts, ideas, problems, and use them to formulate conclusions that help readers understand the purpose of the material. Kent Lewis (2008, p.337) stated that "deductive reasoning describes a process of applying known truths to real situations and reaching new conclusions". It is a type of the logical reasoning that Michael Taube attempts to use in his article to prove that globalization is beneficial to the society at large. The author mentioned that "If a product in Canada is inferior to a product from Korea, the smart consumer will buy the latter” (Taube, 2008, p. 378). In this conclusion, Taube uses a support or reasoning to build into the conclusion that consumers buy cheaper

My English 1310 course was taught by Professor Daniel Stuart. He taught us the concept of academic writing and why it is important. Academic writing is the process of down ideas, using a formal tone, deductive reasoning and third person. Writing done to carry out the requirements of a college or university on a research based level. It requires a starting point or introduction, followed by a thesis on the preferred topic, then comes proving and disproving of the evidence based arguments. Learning academic writing is important because it is a way to communicate our thoughts clearly and originality. It helps us think and see what evidence we can come up to contribute to that thinking. This course approached this idea of academic writing by
