The Singer by Calvin Miller is retelling of the story of Jesus. The Singer travels the land and tells how he is the son of Earthmaker. The singer is Jesus and Earthmaker is God. He sings the Ancient Star Song that states that the Singer is the son of the Earthmaker. He gains many followers and critics, but he sings the same song. The World Hater is the Devil. He tempts the Singer in the dessert and the Singer sees the World Hater in many people. The Singer dies on the death machine because people do not believe in him. Just like Jesus the Singer is resurrected proving he is the son of the Earthmaker. The Singer is a well done modern depiction of Jesus because it pulls descriptions of Jesus from all four Gospels. Calvin Miller draws a lot of inspiration for The Singer from the Gospel of Luke. The Singer is a man for all people. The Singer talks to prostitutes, crippled little girls, and madmen. These outcasts are the Singers greatest followers. The Singer sees the World Hater in the outsiders, but the Singer drives him away. The Singer is portrayed as the word of the Father-Spirit also known as Earthmaker. Father-Spirit says to the Singer, “Sing my Ancient Star Song to the world.” This shows that the Singer is the word of the Earthmaker. Jesus is the word incarnate and so is the singer. John can also be seen in the Singer because the book is a poem. John’s Gospel is very poetic; he calls Jesus things like “King of Kings” or “The Good Shepard”. The Singer is a very poetic name and his other name, the troubadour is also poetic. These names imply that he is singing the good news of the Father-Spirit. The Singer is also portrayed as a prophet.
