Given this verbal conformation that he was the reason for his mother’s suffering McCandless had an obvious hatred towards his parents. In a letter to his sister, Carine, shown in the film Return to the Wild (PBS Documentary), McCandless said that one of his goals was to punish and hurt his parents, he wanted to act as he had divorced his parents. This guilt that his parents bestowed upon him lead him to leave his home, change his name, and run away from reality. He was seeking a life away from the toxic household that he lived in and was tormented in every day. He got the idea to set off into the wilderness because whenever his family went out on camping trips there was no fighting and it was peaceful for them. In Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the reader has the experience to understand what it was like to live in an insane asylum during the 1960’s. Kesey shows the reader the world within the asylum of Portland Oregon and all the relationships and social standings that happen within it. The three major characters’ groups, Nurse Ratched, the Black Boys, and McMurphy show how their level of power effects how they are treated in the asylum. Nurse Ratched is the head of the ward and controls everything that goes on in it, as she has the highest authority in the ward and sabotages the patients with her daily rules and rituals. These rituals include her servants, the Black Boys, doing anything she tells them to do with the patients.
The dynamic between parents and children condition what the child will think and follow through with. It is important that child and parents establish an appropriate relationship that can guide them through their life.This struggle between parents and children as discussed in In Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, the life of wealthy Christopher McCandless is chronicled, and what may have drove him away to traverse the wilds of Alaska, which ultimately lead to his demise. Jon Krakauer takes the reader on ride explaining the damaged relationship between christopher and his parents using specific events and words, this shaped Christopher into the person that went into the woods to find new horizons. Krakauer does this by introducing his purpose.
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.
In the story “Gryphon” by Charles Baxter, a boy named Tommy, who is the main character, attends Five Oaks Elementary School in Five Oaks, Michigan. Tommy’s regular teacher, Mr. Hibler, started to cough badly, so the next day, a substitute teacher named Ms. Ferenczi comes to his class. She is strange and mysterious person, with marionette lines on her face(pg.44, l. 81-85). She sometimes goes off task and starts telling intriguing stories about random topics.
Paloma Josse is a twelve-year-old girl who lives a lavish life. However, she has developed a plan to end her own life by June 16th, the day she turns thirteen. After close observations to the world and people around her, she comes to the conclusion that people seem to never become who they always wanted to be. She assumes that this is inevitable in the life of every adult’s life. She convinces herself that in order to avoid this fate she must end her own life. In hopes of finding beauty, she commits herself to journaling about moments that she finds to be meaningful to leave behind when she is gone.
In the play A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry (1959), the author depicts an African American family whom struggles with the agonizing inferiority present during the 1950s. Hansberry illustrates the constant discrimination that colored people, as a whole, endured in communities across the nation. Mama, who is the family’s foundation, is the driving force behind the family on the search for a better life. With the family living in extreme poverty, their family bond is crucial in order to withstand the repression. Hansberry effectively portrays the racism within society, and how it reinforced unity amongst the family members.
In the Irish detective novel In the Woods by Tana French, we confront the dilemma of discerning the good from the bad almost immediately after cracking open the covers—the narrator and main character, Robert Ryan, openly admits that he “…crave[s] truth. And [he] lie[s].” (French 4) But there is more to this discernment than the mere acceptance that our narrator embellishes the occasional truth; we must be ever vigilant for clues that hint at the verisimilitude of what the narrator is saying, and we must also consider its relation to Robert’s difference from the anticlimactic (essentially, falsehood) and the irrevocable (that which is unshakeable truth). The cast of animals that Wilbur meets in the farm serves as a collective word of advice of sorts. Although the advice that they offer isn’t always correct, such as when the goose suggests that Wilbur run wild and wreak havoc (page 17), they appear to be well-meaning and benign all things considered. They are also very fond of gossip, which is demonstrated by the rapid spread of the news of Wilbur’s escape (page 19). However, while most of them are kind-hearted, there is a singular nasty exception. This exception is a rat named Templeton, who is as self-serving and inconsiderate as they come. He blatantly expresses this by straightforwardly and rudely telling Wilbur that he will eat the latter’s food because he “hasn’t got sense enough” to eat
How can people be so similar and different at the same time? In the novel The Pigman by Paul Zindel both the protagonists John and Lorraine have different characteristics.John and Lorraine are both best friends who are sophomores in high school. Although they are very close friends they have different personalities.At the beginning of the Novel, John is more of a troublesome kid whereas Lorraine is calm, sensitive and compassionate.Overall the novel The Pigman by Paul Zindel demonstrate how different good friends can be.
He looks for a father because his own father is not a factor in his life. He dies when Jim is a young child and does not seem to have a significant effect on Jim’s life. Ben Gunn, Dr. Livesey, and John Silver provide Jim with examples and characteristics he incorporates into the person he becomes. Jim, like many others, finds father figures to identify with and pattern their own lives, whether it is a blood relative or a person they choose from their surroundings. Ben Gunn is the character in the book that shows Jim Hawkins how to survive, provide spiritual guidance, and be proud of who he is.
Every story we read this year was more than interesting. Each one had a different plot, different problems and many different personalities from an enormous group of people. I wonder how long it took for them to realize that what they did was incredible? Every last one of these people had to overcome something in their lives no matter how troublesome it seemed to be.
Jack London wrote the novel The Call of the Wild; it was also his first success (Feast). The Call of the Wild is an exciting beast fable which dramatizes the unforgiving harshness of existence but shows that suffering can lead to heroic self-awareness (Buckner). London was big on the philosophical idea of Naturalism. As well as having links with literary naturalism, "The Call of the Wild is also a mythical book informed throughout with such traditional myths as the Myth of the Hero." Although Buck is always a dog throughout the story, his predicament is highly relevant to the human condition in a novel beginning with concise patterns of description and moving toward an increasingly lyrical style (Williams). The protagonist of The Call of the Wild is a dog named Buck. He's part German Sheppard and half Saint Bernard, he's labeled the "hero" of the story. The story takes place primarily in the Klondike region of Alaska except for in the first chapter it takes place in the Santa Clara Valley of California. The story is centrally focused around Buck; if it wasn't for him not having any speaking parts the reader would think he was a human because of the personality traits he possesses. In this paper we will discuss traits such as Buck's ability to adapt, Buck's bravery, his mental and physical strength, his loyalty and love and his instinct of the wild.
