Men must be courageous and prove themselves through activities like hunting, boxing, fishing, soldiering but what about a young and rich boy that has never had to do these activities before. In Hemingway’s story “The Short and Happy Life of Francis Macomber” a rich couple goes on a dream vacation to hunt on the African plains where a man must prove to himself and everybody that he has courage and it not a coward. Hemingway uses Francis Macomber to show a transformation of courage by learning from new experiences, standing up for himself, and finding happiness.
The beginning of the story Francis Macomber has learned everything from books and only has knowledge of business. He reads about hunts and other exciting activities but he has never done them himself. He wants amaze his wife and prove he can be a big hero and kill a lion. Francis Macomber found courage though happiness. When he killed the buffalo; his first kill he wanted more the rush of excitement. He did not want to return to the same life of fear. In the story before the go look at the buffalo in the bush Macomber states, “He expected the feeling he had about the lion to come back but it did not. For the first time in his life he really felt wholly without fear. Instead of fear he had a feeling of definite elation” ( ). Macomber found happiness but he also was the courage he longed for.
To become a man you do activities like hunting, boxing, fishing, and soldiering. What if a young boy has never done theses type of activities and has only read about them before? Well Francis Macomber was a young boy even though he was thirty-five. He read many books but has never had Experiences before. On this dream vacation he gained many experiences, stood up against his wife, and found happiness which all lead to his transformation into becoming a courageous
