The Salvation Army is a non-governmental organization that reaches out to every continent. It has churches and shelters that servers in over 120 countries. I am a member of this church and have helped with some of it’s global missions. The Salvation Army is a Christian organization that “follows the mainstream of Christian belief and its articles of faith emphasizes God’s saving purposes. It’s objects are the advancement of the Christian Religion, of education, the relief of poverty, and charitable objects that benefit society of mankind.” (salvationarmy.org). The Salvation Army has been around since 1865 created by William Booth in London, England. The Salvation Army in the United States has continued this mission in helping other countries internationally. A major human rights issue that gets overlooked is human trafficking. “Human Trafficking exploits people for the purpose of commercial sex, and/or labor through the use of force, fraud, or coercion.” (Merriam-Webster 2016). “William Booth went out into the dirty streets of London with efforts of helping people, they mostly helped save women and children from the horrors of sex trafficking. The Salvation Army has been fighting human trafficking for over 100 years, and still continues to fight today. The Salvation Army started an “Anti-Trafficking” movement around the world. These programs work with survivors of human trafficking. Human Trafficking is modern day slavery.” (salvationarmysouth.org 2016). “Besides the United States, the Salvation Army has anti-trafficking programs in around the world in hopes of bringing awareness and education about this human rights issue. Earlier this year in January 2016, The Salvation Army teamed up with Michigan State Police to fight human trafficking. “Local Women and girls in Michigan were being grabbed right off the street and sold as sex slaves. The Salvation Army and Michigan State Police created a task force to combat human trafficking. They made undercover sting operations at a Marriott Hotel, and the police was able to find and stop the suspect.” (Hannah Saunders Fox News, 2016).
