Women have not always had the same privileges as men. In the early days, men were classified to be more dominant. In Jonathon Swifts, A Modest Proposal, women were not allowed to have a job and were considered property, the men were the ones that had the jobs and supported the family. In the United States, it was not until 1920 for women to have the right to vote. Throughout time women have increased their role in society. Now, women have the opportunity to work nearly everywhere and hold nearly every position. Christine de Pisan discusses in The Book of the City of Ladies, about the inequalities in jobs between men and women. The role of women in society has changed a lot over time and is still continuing to change. In Betty Friedans, The Feminine Mystique, she writes about how women should be more than just a mother or wife, she also writes about the evolution of how the role of women has increased in freedom in society. In A Modest Proposal, Jonathon Swifts writes about women being considered a property and that the only reason that they are used is to produce offspring. Friedans writes, “Changeless woman, childish woman, a woman’s place is in the home, they were told. But man was changing; his place was in the world and his world was widening. The constitution did not allow women to vote until the 19th amendment in 1971 due to gender discrimination. Deeper in the chapter it discusses the glass ceiling. Women by law have equal opportunities, but most business owners, which are men, will not even take them serious. Women also encounter sexual harassment and some men expect them to do certain things in order for them to succeed in that particular workplace. Today, women and men have equal rights, however, not long ago men believed women were lower than them. During the late eighteenth century, men expected women to stay at home and raise children. Women were given very few opportunities to expand their education past high school because colleges and universities would not accept females. This was a loss for women everywhere because it took away positions of power for them. It was even frowned upon if a woman showed interest in medicine or law because that was a man’s place, not a woman’s, just like it was a man’s duty to vote and not a woman’s.

Women have been deemed property by men since history can remember, but now they have begun demanding equality through protests and education. There has been great progress throughout the development of the modern United States we all know today. As known by anyone in California who has taken a history class in the eighth grade, first we have unjust wages during the industrial revolution, which then extends to World War II, empowering women to take on different roles. This in turns uncovers problems to modern working rights for women, such as non discriminatory positions and equal opportunity in education. Women in the United States are frequently fighting for their rights; although there has been some progress made, there is still much to be done.
Suggested roles of all types set the stage for how human beings perceive their life should be. Gender roles are one of the most dangerous roles that society faces today. With all of the controversy applied to male vs. female dominance in households, and in the workplace, there seems to be an argument either way. In the essay, “Men as Success Objects”, the author Warren Farrell explains this threat of society as a whole. Farrell explains the difference of men and women growing up and how they believe their role in society to be. He justifies that it doesn’t just appear in marriage, but in the earliest stages of life. Similarly, in the essay “Roles of Sexes”, real life applications are explored in two different novels. The synthesis between these two essays proves how prevalent roles are in even the smallest part of a concept and how it is relatively an inevitable subject.
In her essay, “Housewives and Homework: The Lacemakers of Narsapur,” Chandra Talpade Mohanty focused on how men sold products that women produced and profited from women’s work. The essay basically pointed out how work can be defined according to sexual identity. It made me wonder if American women are still perceived by men in society as being housewives even though some of us are doctors, lawyers, teachers etc. Is the work that women do seen as what Mohanty pointed out in her essay as “leisure time activities”? I think that to some extent men believe that women’s sole purpose on Earth is to be their wives/partners and to be good mothers to their children. Fears are an overwhelming aspect of our life from birth until old age. Whether we fear an object such as something lying underneath the bed, a certain figure such as Michael Myers, or an intangible idea such as the future or even death, fear always exists. In several cases, fear leads to a suppression of one’s self and the wonderful ideas that one’s minds may contain. For example, the cure to cancer could very well be trapped inside the mind of someone who has been constantly oppressed and taught to believe that they are not smart enough to get far in life. In “Professions for Women,” author Virginia Woolf persuades her audience, intellectual women, to overcome her insecurities in order to improve her life. To soundly achieve this purpose, Woolf utilizes rhetorical questions, an extended metaphor, and allusion.
Today, you see women working in large businesses and think nothing of it. Before women had the rights they do today, you wouldn’t see them in large jobs, on television, in movies, or selling and buying property. Women have the rights that they do because of the hard work of many important women, Women’s Rights Conventions, the 19th Amendment, and many other important processes that worked toward women having the same rights as men.
There have been many changes in the course of history. Dating back, all the way from slavery to the abolition of slavery and other struggles that have since been fought. Back in the 1920s, women were not as privileged as they are today. Decades ago, women had to fight to be heard, fight to have their freedom to vote, fight for job equality and to own property. Once slavery was abolished and slaves were freed, women were still unable to speak freely. Women such as Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and many others fought for not only a woman’s right to be seen as an equal to their male counterparts; but also for the rights of others.
Women and men are nestled into predetermined cultural molds when it comes to gender in American society. Women play the roles of mothers, housekeepers, and servants to their husbands and children, and men act as providers, protectors, and heads of the household. These gender roles stem from the many culture myths that exist pertaining to America, including those of the model family, education, liberty, and of gender. The majority of these myths are misconceptions, but linger because we, as Americans, do not analyze or question them. The misconception of gender suggests that biological truths no longer dictate our gender roles as men and women; they derive from cultural myths. We, as a nation, need to do severe critical thinking about this delusion of gender, how has limited us in the home, media, and education, how it currently limits us, and what the results of the current and future changes in gender roles will be.
Since women have fought for a long time and proven their importance in society, they deserve the same rights as men. Before women can prove they too deserve the same rights as men, they must first put to rest the myths and beliefs of their status in this country. This myth of the female status in the United States, and in most other places in the world, has always been the same. It is the belief that women should be in the kitchen, taking care of the kids, and the house, amongst other beliefs. However, in today's society, this is considered ludicrous.
