With the world constantly evolving, it isn’t hard to see how in the past decade technology has taken over every aspect of our lives. It has become the center and main way to communicate, learn, and advance in this fast paced world. In this essay I will speak about the 21st century classroom and teaching, different technologies that can be used to teach, and how students can use technology as learners. Students are wired in a different way than our past generation, they are advancing as society is advancing, so when it comes to the learning they are in tune to technology. Students are quicker to engage in activities that incorporate technology since it is what they are used to and this can enhance their interest and grab their attention. Technology also helps students work in groups and become interactive while working in presentations that allow them to use resources online to find information and use the accessed information that is available to us today. Technology has an advantage for teachers, for it helps organize and remain updated with student information, progress, and learning strategies. Technology can open teachers eyes on which strategies help their students better understand the lessons, rather than the one-size-fits-all approach, and it gives them an insight on what works and what doesn’t since children are not all the same. This plays a huge role in diversity, as teachers we need to provide all we can to students that have different ethnic backgrounds or learning disabilities. As a 21st century teacher the roles have drastically changed, teachers are facilitators of learning rather than deliverer of knowledge. Teachers help engage, discuss, inquire, and question students on their learning; it is more student-centered. The teacher is the prompter, the resource, the assessor, the organizer, the participant, and the tutor of the student to help improve learning, and influence practice and production. The educational technology standards for students and skills required to in the 21st century are: creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration, research and information fluency, critical thinking, problem solving, digital citizenship, and technology operations.
