The Rebellion of the Farm Animals Has the thought of how a utopian world turns into a dystopian world? The novella Animal Farm was written by George Orwell, the author of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Mr. Jonas, the owner of the Manor Farm came into the farm drunk and knocked things down unto the animals when he fell asleep the animals gathered to listen to Old Major’s speech. He brought up how the animals were always producing things for humans and after that they were slaughtered. The animals said that the humans did not do anything in return as a form of gratification for the animals. A few days after the meeting, Old major passed, and three new pigs came to take his place, Napoleon, Snowball, and Squealer. The three pigs kicked out Mr. Jonas
Animalism is shared equally and treated equally throughout all of the animals. In Animal Farm, everyone has the same rights and they have principles to follow, Napoleon and Snowball created the Seven Commandments which are “ ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL”( Orwell 25). The Seven commandments say that all of the animals are equal. The animals believed that they were equal and that they have the same rights as all the other animals but little do they know that the pigs are more privileged and higher than the other farm animals. But in Animal Farm, Napoleon and Snowball takes over the farm and violated the Seventh Commandment. It is a set of rules that the animals have to follow to maintain than equal society but the pigs broke the principles of animalism which affect the whole farm. The pigs, in the end, started to live in the ways of a human; wearing the human's’ clothes, sleeping in their beds and walking on two legs which tampered with the first commandment. To be equal the people have to be the same person. In Anthem, Everyone is considered as we, there is no I until the end of the novella, “ Our name is Equality 7-2521, as it is written on the iron bracelet […] We were born with a curse. [...] We are one in all and all in one. There Are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (Rand 12-14) They referred to each other in first person pronoun or the name the council gave them. Even in an equal society like this they still will be punished for the rules they violate, even though they are supposed to be equal the council gives them jobs that depend on their status, in the novella Equality 7-2521 was assigned to being a street sweeper which is for the people who are not educated enough to be a scholar. The saying “history repeats itself” is used quite often, but how many times have you actually seen it happen? The book Animal Farm portrays the idea of history repeating itself. The character Benjamin and the pigs in the story show history repeating itself throughout the book. In addition to these characters within the book, North Korea displays history's repetition outside the book.
Animal Farm is a story of how the animals revolted because of the way they were treated by Mr. Jones, the farmer. They felt that the farmers made all the profit, reaped all the rewards but didn't do any of the work. So they formed a government called Animalism. In Animalism, there are no owners, no rich, but no poor, workers got a better life, and all animals are equal. They had even established laws called the Seven Commandments, which were intended to give basic rights to animals and protect them from oppression. The goals of the government were also established. The goals said that everyone was equal, there would be more food and sleep for all, there was to be respect for all animals, and they would build a windmill to make life better for all. By the end of the book, all this no longer existed. The animals were getting less sleep, less food, and less respect. The windmill became a source of money for the leaders, not for all the animals. The seven commandments were gradually changed to suit the pigs and then there was only one Commandment left. "'Are the Seven Commandments the same as they used to be, Benjamin?' There was nothing now except for a single Commandment. It ran: All animals are equal but some are more equal than others" That single commandment made the pigs more powerful. George Orwell is the author of the novel Animal Farm who wrote the book about an animal rebellion. In this novel there are many characters with different types of personalities. A boar named Napoleon is genuinely a fierce looking boar. I chose Napoleon because he his bossy, he has a flagrant desire for power, and has a frightening look. He acts as if he is the chief of all animals. “The only Berkshire on the farm, not much of a talker, but with a reputation for getting his own way… Quicker in speech and more inventive”. (Orwell 12). This quote is saying that he only cared about himself and pleasing himself. He is very creative and does not have the same essence as other animals. George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm is a great example of allegory and political satire. The novel was written to criticize totalitarian regimes and particularly Stalin's corrupt rule in Russia. In the first chapter, Orwell gives his reasons for writing the story and what he hopes it will accomplish. It also gives reference to the farm and how it relates to the conflicts of the Russian revolution. The characters, settings, and the plot were written to describe the social upheaval during that period of time and also to prove that the good nature of true communism can be turned into something atrocious by an idea as simple as greed.
In the beginning of the text, “all animals are equal” (Orwell 6) and are united under the common goal of freeing themselves from “the tyranny of human beings” (5). However, life on the farm progresses in a manner contradictory to this initial belief, and ultimately does not benefit the masses. Rather, it is driven exclusively by and for the privileged elite, “the cleverest of animals” (9): the pigs. Napoleon and his supporters are able to impose their authority upon the “lower animals” (92) by using language to create “the seven commandments” (15), and consequently re-creating them when they see fit. For example, it was declared in the Commandments that “no animal shall kill any other animal” (61). Yet, when the very pigs that created the law break it, it is re-written such that “no animal shall kill any other animal without cause” (61). These subtle manipulations take place consistently throughout the story, until all previous laws are eradicated and replaced with one overarching commandment: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (90). Here Orwell highlights the fact that by re-writing the past, those in power are able to directly control the future. By monopolizing language, they monopolize progress. In the first chapter, the animal’s labor is best described as slavery. The animals were all poorly fed and overworked. Uproar for a revolution was approaching. Old Major, an old pig of the farm tells the animals the idea of a revolution to all of the animals. In Communism’s “Communist Manifesto” Communism also talks about a change that must occur. One quality of a dystopia that is very well represented in Animal Farm is restriction. The animals had seven commandments that must always be followed and four of them were restrictions. One restriction given to the animals was “no animal shall ever wear clothes” (19) animals were forbidden from clothes because only humans were supposed to wear them. Another restriction animal had that “no animal shall ever drink alcohol” (19) the animals could not drink alcohol because only humans did and alcohol caused them to act crazy. One major restriction the animals had was “no animal shall kill any other animal” (19) this restriction of no killing was made by other animals for all the animals to follow. Animal farm has many examples of dystopia but the strongest quality of one is restriction.
There is a substantial amount of conflicts that occur in this satirical story. Often these conflicts are between the pigs and the rest of the animals. Only a minute portion of the animals didn’t really have some sort of conflict with Snowball, Napoleon, Squealer, or the rest of the dominating pigs. Overall, Snowball was a better leader than Napoleon, yet the animals reacted differently to Napoleon than to Snowball.
The biggest inequality on Animal Farm was that none of the animals had any say against the word of Napoleon. It was an absolute dictatorship. After Snowball was expelled from the farm, Napoleon annoucned that there would be no more Sunday meetings, in which decisions had always been debated. George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a political satire of a totalitarian society ruled by a mighty dictatorship, in all probability a fable for the events surrounding the Russian Revolution of 1917. The animals of “Manor Farm” overthrow their human master after a long history of mistreatment. Led by the pigs, the farm animals continue to do their work, only with more pride, knowing that they are working for themselves, as opposed to working for humans. Little by little, the pigs become dominant, gaining more power and advantage over the other animals, so much so that they become as corrupt and power-hungry as their predecessors, the humans.
At the beginning on the text, after the rebellion, the animals are all seen as equal, with a high quality of life. Napoleon and Squealer often mentioned how important it was for all animals to do their equal share of work; however they often did little to no work. They were able to do this by Squealer acting as the media and reminding the animals that the hard work that the pigs did deserved a larger break then everyone else. As the text progressed, Napoleon and his small group of pigs slowly changed the commandments to suit themselves. Many animals didn’t question the change in commandments; and when they did they were either proven wrong or made an example of via public executions. During chapter 6, the pigs are questioned after allegedly breaking the 4th commandment “no animals shall sleep in a bed”. Squealer was quick to react, by stating that the pigs required extra rest due to how smart they were. When Muriel goes to read the commandments to prove that what the pigs are doing is wrong, she finds that the board now states “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”. ... In the end, George Orwell’s dark brooding fairy tale Animal Farm proves to be a symbolic and understanding book. In its pages we can see the contrast between a supposedly communistic state where everyone is equal and the same, and how in the end it only leads to a total dictatorial establishment of totalitarianism, where everything is controlled by an elite group. Though Animal Farm was established with the idea of every animal being equal, in the end, the voice of the scheming pigs was the only one heard. Secondly, the book powerfully symbolizes key figures that have appeared in history.
In conclusion, in the novel ‘Animal Farm’, the dream of animals to have a better or a more perfect society, transforms into a totalitarian nightmare mainly due to the actions of the pigs. Yet in a way, the other animals are also responsible for that as they could not stand consistently for their dream. Thus ultimately, they become the victims of the totalitarianism of the pigs and loose their freedom and happiness.
