“The Queen Bee in the Corner Office” by Olga Khazan is an article many working women can relate to. From various jobs I have had, it is safe to say every working woman has at least encountered a “Queen Bee”. From high school we know a queen bee usually consists of being the prettiest girl in school; wearing the trendiest clothes; knowing all the hot gossip; and having the hottest boyfriend. According to Khazan (2017), in a work setting, the queen bee consists of three characteristics; the aggressive bitch, passive-aggressive bitch, and the tuned out, indifferent bitch. The aggressive bitch is a high ranking woman at a firm who usually verbally assaults anyone. Which is why women tend to cut down on women, not only based on reasons why they want a day off but on their behavior as well. “With women, I’m partly being judged on my abilities and partly being judged on whether or not I’m a ‘friend’, or ‘nice’, or ‘fun,’”(p.52, Khazan). “Pinpointed the conditions in which queen bees emerge: when women are a marginalized group in the workplace, have made big sacrifices for their career, or are already predisposed to show little “gender discrimination” (p.54, Khazan). Not only women face sexism, but gender and racial bias from work. This turns into the “competitive threat” when a woman worries that a female newcomer will outshine her in the workplace. Workers do not respect female bosses compared to men so that prompts the bosses to treat workers worse, which causes the workers to think less of their boss and most likely continue disrespecting them. Women seem to not be respected by men just as easily, that respect needs to be commended. Also, for those women that gave honest feedback were liked less and less likely to be hireable.
