The Pyramid of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

1097 Words3 Pages

Abraham Maslow was a psychologist who created the concept of the 5 levels of needs, back in 1943. These 5 levels form a pyramid that is referred to as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. An Individual starts at the bottom of the pyramid, at physical needs, and then promotes him or herself up. Physical needs are the most basic yet vital needs for survival. These include things such as, food, water, shelter, etc. If a person is successful in accomplishing those needs, they can move up onto the next level of needs, known as safety needs. Examples of safety needs include health insurance, safe neighbourhood, as well as a good shelter. Next you move onto social needs. These are needs for belonging, love, and affection. After this, comes esteem needs. These are needs that focus on personal worth and value, social recognition, and accomplishment. Finally, after all other needs have been met, comes self-actualization needs. This is the highest level of needs, and they include less concern for the opinion of others and the interest in fulfilling your potential. The first of the 5 needs, is physical. Physical needs are known as basic needs that are vital for survival. These are the most important of the 5 needs, since all the other needs become secondary until these physical needs are met. The ad that I choose to represent physical needs is an ad of Sealtest Milk. The message of this ad is that if you drink this milk, you will live a very healthy life. This message is shown by the pictures and the text. One of the pictures is a boy lifting weights. This ad is telling the viewers that you'll be able to life weights like that if you drink this milk and stay healthy. Another picture is of an apple. When you think of an apple, you think of be... ... middle of paper ... ...f becoming, you will need to get facial cosmetic surgery; in other words, plastic surgery is the only way to achieve self-fulfillment. There is a strong message that the person making this ad is trying to get through. The ad is telling the viewers that you have the opportunity to correct any flaws, and reach your 'maximum potential.' They chose their words very wisely. It says, “Results that are fresh, natural and still you!” The “still you” part really sticks out to me,because when I read that part, I feel that the author had a purpose behind writing that. He/she is telling the readers that you're still going to be the same person, just better or everything you are capable of becoming. So basically, if you perform this surgery, you can achieve self-actualization. In my opinion, this is an extremely effective ad that sends a strong message out to the viewers.
