Some student athletes say they do not have enough time to make it to class. According to many that have opinions from both sides of the issue have come up with a possible solution. They said it depends on the person if they want to push to receive an education or not. There are some who have been able to do both. Even though student athletes do not have time to attend classes they need to get an education to have something to fall back on if sports does not work out, and they need to have a certain GPA to be eligible to play.
Many of the athlete’s that are playing in the college football now are not as smart as people would think they would be going to some of the best colleges in the country. According to an article from Colorado University “most freshman football players have a average ACT score 945 which is not the score they need to get into that premier college that they are in...” (Admissions, Buffzone). They have this thing that is called special admissions many of top athletes use to get into good colleges. Which is basically getting them for their athletic ability instead of what they can do in the classroom. School 's lower their requirements because they want the top athletes to play for their sports program.

There are thousands of high school football players across the nation, and a handful of them have what it takes to play at the college level. Those that do have the raw talent normally get reached by college football recruiters and coaches. The NCAA, the National College Athletic Association, has many rules and regulations especially surrounding the rules and conduct of recruiting student athletes. Men's football takes the most notice, as well as basketball, of all collegiate sports in the U.S. today (Smith, 2015). According to Langelett (2003), the NCAA limits each school to 85 football scholarships. With a limited number of scholarships available, schools spend a considerable amount of time and money on recruiting players.
Almost all colleges have friendly classes or teachers that understand the stresses of the student athlete that has to practice and study. But they do not understand the young man or woman who works full time and is trying to make a better life for themselves. These teachers are selected by the coaches and ADs as the teaches to have. These friends of the program will make sure that a student is eligible to play. These teachers will also sometimes waive assignments and even allow slacked attendance. Were as when the average Joe misses he will loose credit and not be allowed to make up missed work.
Over the past 20 years, there has been a major increase in the popularity of college athletes. From 1989 to 2004, there was a 27% increase in ticket revenue (Brown). Despite the rigorous schedules the athletes had, they are still considered just a student. The NCAA cannot continue to allow these schools to work the athletes as much as they do without giving the athletes what they deserve. This is a horrible oppressive system that must be fixed.
Millions of Americans stare at ESPN or absorb themselves in the most recent issue of Sports Illustrated just to catch the latest news on their favorite teams' recruits, recent games, and statistics. Often just viewed as a past time to most, it is easy to lose sight of why these athletes are on the field, court, etc. to begin with. Believe it or not, it's for their education. These young adults ranging anywhere from seventeen to twenty-three years of age are all members of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). As such these students must initially meet the requirements to get accepted into their chosen university, participate in their sport, and ultimately graduate from their selected institution.
Learning to set goals and achieve them as a student-athlete will help them become a well-rounded individual. Student-athletes should not be paid to play and the amateur status should remain as it has for generations. Student-athletes have not matured enough at this stage of life to be able to handle all of the additional responsibilities that would be forced upon them with the professional status. Put the almighty dollar aside and let student-athletes be student’s first, amateur athletes second, allowing them to grow and mature into tomorrow’s effective leaders.
College sports are a major revenue producing industry. Athletic programs and their student-athletes can achieve national recognition and generate millions of dollars in revenue for their university. Colleges use this revenue to invest in players, pay for their education, and provide state of the art training facilities, which are used to improve their athletic performance. As revenue driven colleges begin to prioritize athletics, the emphasis on the quality and standards of an undergraduate education are diminishing. Compromising their academic acceptance requirements, universities have now found that the educational ability of their newly accepted student athletes are inadequate, to say the least (Gurney). Playing a sport in college is equivalent to working a full-time job (Thomas). There are rules that allow major-college football coaches to only demand twenty hours of the players time each week (Wieberg). However, studies show that those athletes are doubling those hours per week during the season (Wieberg). Other sports are putting in the equivalent of a full time work week (Wieberg). They are left unable to pay for college, with hospital bills and the dream of becoming a professional athlete is flushed down the drain. Some might argue that they can get an academic scholarship, after all school should have been their priority. It seems to be a very popular notion to argue that college athletes should be paid just like pro athletes. College athletes put in hours on end for practice, games, and they bring in money for the school. Many fans of the sport spend money on tickets for games, merchandise, and when betting on the games. Television broadcasting alone of college sports have soared to nearly $2 billion a year (Koba, 1). The biggest argument is that college athletes should be paid because they generate so much money for the schools they represent. The amount of money big colleges bring in every year is staggering. Why shouldn’t they be compensated for their efforts when so much money is being made? And are they really making money though, or are they actually losing money? However, with most to all college athletes having their college tuition paid for, what greater reward could they ask for than a free education?
A student athlete has many more responsibilities than the typical college student. With these added responsibilities, should student athletes be required to follow the same class attendance rules that are put into place for all students? If they’re good students, should they be allowed to miss class every now and then to train? In my opinion the answer to that question is yes. I have mentioned previously my proposition for the college athlete attendance policy. I propose that there should be a national rule that college athletes, with a GPA above a 3.0, should be allowed to miss class to train, work on homework, or rest. The athlete would have to notify the professor that they wouldn’t be in class and find out what is being covered in the class session. If the athletic department, student, and professors work together, I don’t see why this solution would not work.
College athletes have a goal that they pursue. The jump to the professional sports leagues is an accomplishment that most college athletes wanted to achieve. But most college athletes go to college and forego completing their senior year and don’t get a degree. In basketball most athletes are one and done. This means they go to college for only one year then enter the NBA draft. For the NFL players have to be out of high school for three years and necessarily don’t have to go to college.

The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) is an association set up to regulate the athletic programs of colleges in the United States and Canada such as eligibility, sportsmanship, and play. Due to NCAA rules, the “student” comes first in “student athlete.” This means that in order to be a full time student, 12 credit hours a semester are required, and in order to compete in athletics, students must maintain a core GPA of 2.3 or higher. It may seems easy right now but throw in lifting, games and practices, along with team meetings, and you’ve got yourself a full time job on the side.
Many people believe that College athletes have it easy, and who wouldn’t think that? A free education, free living; getting to travel and play the sport that many people would love to still be able to. Student athletes also get to pick classes earlier than a regular student and have the ability to be excused from classes to go to games and special events. The life of a student athlete sounds like an enticing thing for many people; especially those who are not student athletes on scholarships or walk-ons to a college team. The rising cost of attending college has made the younger athletic population work just as hard to receive a scholarship to play a sport, because they may come from poverty where they can’t otherwise afford to attend school, which is beneficial to them. Understand, that college is a place where academics comes first, and everything else is second; this includes athletics. But are these athletes treated fairly and given all the right things they need to succeed in life, let alone college?
