There are people do who do not like the Agriculture industry;some of these people are PETA, and there is tension between the two groups and I will be discussing the tension. So before you read this essay you may be thinking “ Who is PETA?” Well I will provide a little background information on who PETA is, PETA ( People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals) is a animal rights activist group who zone in on certain groups of people. One example of one of those groups would be the 4-H and the Agriculture world. So now that you know some basic background information, let’s go into some topic that have caused problems between the two sides.

Animal hoarding is a very common issue, and is not being reported the way that it should be. These situations need to stop being overlooked and dealt with correctly, not only to save the animals’ lives, but to keep the owner and their family in wellbeing. Animals are very important and should be taken care of very well. When they are put into a hoarding situation they cannot go out and get the help that they need. We need to be their voice and speak up for them. It is necessary to learn the signs and behaviors of animal hoarding.
Do you think that keeping exotic animals as pets should be legal? Well, I think that owning exotic animals as pets should be illegal. First, safety is a main concern for both the animals and for people. Secondly, it cost a very large amount of money to properly care for these animals; money people usually don’t have by themselves. Finally, it is against the law in many places to own these animals. Exotic animals should not be kept as pets.
Throughout the world, wild cats, reptiles and primates live peacefully in their natural habitats. Despite this, every year more and more of these exotic animals are becoming domestic pets. Keeping exotic animals as pets is unsafe and should therefore be made illegal. They pose as a risk of injury, disease and are an invasion the natural environment. Some people believe that keeping a pet does not pose a risk if properly kept and trained. However, these arguments are not corroborated by the information available. Keeping exotic animals as pets is dangerous, and should be made illegal in Canada.
I confess, I am guilty. I am guilty of supporting these disgraceful prisons where the ones held captive are, at times, abducted from there homes and forced to entertain us. I did not support them because I wanted to or thought it to be right, but because I was ignorant and did not know the truth. In fact, at one point in our lives we are all guilty of it. Looks can be deceiving. At first glance we would never think these places to be horrible, but in all reality they are. I am talking about zoos, aquariums, marine parks and circuses. All of these places are just another form of prisons. The only difference between this prison and other prisons is that the prisoners did nothing to deserve to be in there, they are all innocent. I have been to a zoo and a circus, making me guilty, therefore it is my responsibility to inform you about what really goes on behind closed doors.
Exotic animals, such as lions, tigers, and bears, might seem like cute and cuddly pets at first, however, little do people know how dangerous and endangered these furry creatures truly are. In this case, exotic means coming from foreign countries all over the world. The demand for exotic animals in the United States and all across the globe is in very high demand. People take them from their natural habitats and put them in a cage for the rest of their lives. It is predicted that the demand will keep going up and animals will become more endangered, if nothing is done about it.
The exotic pet trade is a booming industry, raking in millions of dollars every year. Everything from harmless leopard geckos to hyenas can be found in 30 of the 50 states. Of those 30 states, only 21 require permits to own these animals (Webber 2010). Indiana has just recently withdrawn its own requirement for permits, making 10 states that allow any kind of exotics without documentation (Kelly 2015). It is estimated that 15,000 big cats are being kept as pets in the United States alone, with more captive tigers in Texas than there are in India. Approximately 15,000 primates and 7.3 million reptiles are also being kept in the US (Webber 2010). What does all of this mean and, more importantly, what can be done about it?
Born Free USA has tracked 2,682 incidents in the United States involving exotic pets since 1990, and this is only a partial list since they can only track incidents that they hear through media reporting (“Exotic Animal Incidents”). Due to people keeping exotic animals as pets, humans and exotic animals are suffering unnecessary injuries and death. Although some people believe that exotic pets are wonderful companions to own, it should be illegal to keep exotic animals as pets because exotic pets pose potential threat to the safety of their owners and the public, are dangerous to human health, and are treated improperly. First thing to remember is exotic animals pose threat to the safety of their owners and the public. According to
Zoos today say that one of their main goals is to conserve endangered species and eventually reintroduce them back into the wild. However, Benjamin Beck, former associate director of biological programs at the National Zoo in Washington, found that over the past century only 16 of 145 reintroduction programs worldwide ever actually restored any of the animals back to the wild (qtd. in Fravel). He also found that a majority was carried out by the government and not the actual programs themselves. Beck noted that the billions of dollars the zoos were receiving were going towards hi-tech exhibits and marketing strategies to get people to go to the zoos. “A dog is a man’s best friend” goes much deeper than the phrase might initially imply. Recently many medical journals have begun to identify with the many and varied benefits of pet ownership. Men have always relied upon animals for work, transportation, and survival. As times have changed, man has begun to appreciate a different bond with animals. Gone are the days of animals running free outside around the homestead, for now animals are allowed inside and are considered by many to be an integral part of our daily lives! Medical studies have found that animals have a much greater intelligence level than originally thought. Through proper training and experience, animals are not only household pets, but also are becoming an accepted form of medical treatment.
When thinking about owning a pet, one usually thinks of a dog or a cat. According to Robin Micheli from CNBC, more than 20% of American citizens have decided to switch to exotic pets. Many people are getting bored of the same old house pets and want something new from the wild such as a dik dik, a zorilla and a kinkajou. Sadly, most people don't realize the risks of owning an exotic animal. Keeping exotic animals as pets poses physical and mental problems for the animal and its owner.
You can take action and report inhumane conditions to the USDA, write letters to the editor, and even pressure local officials to stop subsidizing zoos with taxpayer’s money.
Would you like to live a happy and productive life? Then get pets! I must admit it is hard to believe that domesticated animals can promote mental and physical health, but many studies have shown that they can. People who own pets have been known to lead longer and happier lives than those without them. As we get older, we become less active. The more inactive we become, the higher our risk of death. We therefore need something in our lives to keep us busy so we don’t die prematurely, and a pet is just the thing to do it. This is probably because of the companionship, exercise, and responsibility that they provide. On the other hand, you must find a pet that is compatible with you or with your life style. Maintaining good mental health is crucial for living a normal life.
