Neoliberalism has changed its meaning and definition over the years, but as of right now the Merriam Webster dictionary defines it as “a liberal who de-emphasizes traditional liberal doctrines in order to seek progress by more pragmatic methods.” This all means that the economics aspects of society are much more closed off and in favor of big businesses that tend to exploit consumers and those that work for them. It wants privatize business and allow for there to be free trade. Neoliberalism is also about reducing government involvement and reduce spending to the point where it can open up privatized sectors in the economy. It allows for privatization of businesses, thus causing a reduction in government intervention when they are doing something that is hurting lower income people, and especially those with different cultural backgrounds than most Americans. Making it seem that it is fine to exploit people of a Latino background, because they have no way or protecting themselves. However, even when the try to protect one another these big business make is extremely difficult for them to fight for their rights and their chance of winning is always very slim. Behind the Seams, Fruits of Injustice, and Maquilapolis are able to demonstrate how neoliberalism works in different part of Latin America and the effects that it has on their people, especially women in these countries. All the women that we have read about or seen in the documentary in class are about gender inequality. This helps emphasize the point that gender inequality is not just an American trait, but a human trait because it does happen in many other places as well. The middle way of Keynes and Sweden all have a neoliberalism aspect to the way they do things in their government, and applying that to these different places helps explain why some things happen, but also gives an idea on how the problem can be solves based off of Behind the Seams, Fruits of Injustice, and Maquilapolis readings and
