There has been a lot of controversy recently over immigration policies and disagreements between parties. Some support deportation while others believe illegal immigrants deserve a chance to become citizens. America always had an open border immigration policy, allowing people from all over the world to escape oppression, war time, and many other negative conditions to seek opportunity for a better life. This gave the United States of America the designation “The Land of Opportunity.” In America, every citizen has independence and full rights within the boundaries of just law, and ultimate success is attainable given enough effort is put forth. They have a strong argument, as they would be able to live in the United States, be encouraged to follow the law otherwise get deported, and they could work, contributing to the economy. America then benefits by not having to provide government benefits or privileges of any sort that a citizen could have. The argument for this is that immigrants will be more encouraged to go through the process legally to guarantee a chance for citizenship. This sounds good to everybody except the immigrant. Illegal immigrants who do not come over and break laws, deserve a chance. Some of these immigrants could not embark upon certain paths that legal immigrants could. According to the American Immigration Council, “Immigration to the United States on a temporary or permanent basis is generally limited to three different routes: employment, family reunification, or humanitarian protection. While the U.S. immigration system is generous, each of these possibilities is highly regulated and subject to numerical limitations and eligibility requirements. Most unauthorized immigrants do not have the necessary family or employment relationships and often cannot access humanitarian protection, such as refugee or asylum status.” (“Why Don’t They Just Get In Line?”, 2016) These illegal immigrants had no choice but to travel to the United States illegally. This does not make them criminals or bad people. They had to look out for themselves. An illegal immigrant that can pass a background check, pay his dues, and then get behind all the legal immigrants trying to become citizens, deserves an opportunity. At Del Sol High School in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 29, 2013, President Obama stated, “We've got to lay out a path -- a process that includes passing a background check, paying taxes, paying a penalty, learning English, and then going to the back of the line,
