Does Detention Actually Serve A Purpose? For the longest time, detentions have had negative connotations associated with it. This is why I feel that detentions are not very effective. Often times, academic work, or silent reading are the options to choose from when being in detention. This is a problem itself. If students misbehave in class anyways, and are forced to do more work, the impacts of detention weaken and soon become meaningless to the students. Students may rebel and this leads to low production. However, if meaningful tasks such as cleaning the classroom, are given to students with behavior issues, this can make them feel important. For example, expectations should be set at the beginning of the year so both teacher and students are on the same page. According to the National Association of School Psychologists, "Positive discipline strategies are research-based procedures that focus on increasing desirable behaviors instead of simply decreasing undesirable behaviors through punishment." These changes include the use of positive reinforcement, modeling, supportive teacher-student relations, family support and assistance from a variety of educational and mental health specialists. (NASP, 2002). After continuing to research, there has been a few strategies that tend to work among many different schools and students. One example of an effective strategy for disciplining students is Positive behavioral supports and social skills training. This can be done by schools providing interventions that help students with emotional and behavioral disorders as well as those who suffer from lack of social skills in order to significantly improve school-wide behavior and safety (NASP, 2002). Additionally, having adult mentors who work with students to help to improve self-concept and motivation to engage in appropriate behavior usually is beneficial to the students causing troubles as well as to the rest of the school environment.
