Since the beginning of time, mothers have always cared for their children. At-home moms taught and raised their kids until they were old enough to live on their own. As millenniums passed, moms would teach their daughters the life of a woman, cooking and cleaning for the male members of the family. As the mid-1900s came, mothers stopped staying home and began to work outside the comforts of their houses. With no one to take care of the children, a new industry was formed: childcare centers and daycares. Children flooded these businesses when their parents were at work and stayed until one parent got off. Daycares made a mother’s life easier when she went to work, knowing her kids were cared for. The economy is very important to any business. When the economy is down, businesses have a hard time keeping their doors open. Parents might be out of work or do not have the 8 to 5 type of job (Daycare 1). Amy Phan writes, “Parents lost jobs or had reduced work hours and took children out of day care” (1). She explains that parents are finding child care too expensive to continue (2). Directors can introduce new services to offset the falling enrollment. Some centers are offering parents flexible and half-time care programs and are watching kids on a drop-in basis (Daycare 1). The daycare Martha & May responded to the declining enrollment by boosting up marketing and offering special prices (Phan 3). Although most daycares can handle the changes of the economy, some fall short and have to be closed down. Consequently, parents have to find alternative programs for their children. When the New Haven daycare closed down, parents say that the search for a new program was difficult, being turned down because of space issues by daycares the district directed them to (Chinapen 2). Directors have to be careful how they manage their business financials. They never know how bad a situation will get, so they must learn to improvise what they can to stay in
