This is a common occurrence today in the United States. It is very common for women to come to America and have their babies there so that said child will gain citizenship, thus making it easier for the family to travel to and from the United States. Matt Sheehan of The Washington Post describes that birth tourism in the U.S. is most practiced by those from Asian and Latin American countries. These “tourists” frequently stay in secretive, usually illegal, hostels and homes where they can pay a certain fee and be taken care of during their birth while also remaining hidden from U.S. officials. Popular locations for these foreigners to find this sort of help include Miami (especially for Russians and other eastern Europeans), Los Angelos, and New York City (Kessler). The practice of Birth Tourism, and how easily people can gain citizenship from it, has caused a lot of debate in the Unites States. Keeping the 14th Amendment how it is, and continuing to allow the greater inflow of illegal immigrants, is only going to cause more economic strain on the country, a lot of resources go into taking care of new mothers and babies, and the United States should not have to pay for those who manipulated the system and purposefully had their children here, in order to gain these Benefits/. Also, it is simply too easy for people to gain citizenship this way. I think making it so that one parent needs to be a citizen is fair. I do think it should be harder to gain U.S. citizenship than it currently is, because just for one to travel here to have a baby and doing so should not make their child a
