The cult classic movie The Princess Bride has a connection to the Greek myth of Pomona and Vertumnus and to Apollo and Daphne’s tale. They share a similar theme of disguised seduction that is crucial to the plot. This being one using deceit or a disguise to make the one they are after fall in love with them. These are not the only stories that use this theme, but they are the most notable. The similarities of The Princess Bride and the Greek myth of Pomona and Vertumnus are plentiful. They both focus on a “good girl”. This is the type of girl who is pure, joyful and caring. She’s simple yet has some wealth or power. Pomona is noted as her love being the land and Venus’ charms do not work on her. (Ovid pg.344), similar to Buttercups strong will. In the most basic form: a girl rejects a guy that keeps trying to marry her. Daphne was a nymph that with her relation to nature also gave her a connection to Artemis and due to Daphne worshipping Artemis she wanted to stay a virgin. Similar to Pomona’s shunning the opposite sex. (Ovid pg, 344). Both Apollo and Vertumnus dress as the opposite sex as a way to communicate with their true loves. This is used to deceit the girls into noticing them and proclaiming their love for them. Unlike Pomona and Vertumnus, Apollo and Daphne do not have a happily ever after. Daphne is turned into a tree after she pleads with her father to keep her virginity, unlike Pomona who ends up marrying the man who sought after her. The reason the men fall in love is varies. Vertumnus saw Pomona and noted how he “… loved more than all…” (Ovid 344), yet Apollo was shot with Eros’s arrow.
