The history in a family can influence many generations. Certain families have stereotypes about them based on family history. This is a real world situation; the movie The Pregnancy Project, stereotypes about teen pregnancy where shown, and how they affect people. In the Pregnancy Project, the use of Gabi’s background influenced people’s reactions because her family has a history of teen pregnancy. Gabi Rodriguez is a senior in high school and must come up with a project to graduate. Her first idea was to do statistics in foster care. She gets a name of a girl who is foster care from her teacher, Tyra, and when she is talking to her, Tyra tells her that she’s pregnant. They said that she was talented and had so much potential, and that she just threw it all away. Some weren’t surprised. One teacher, Mr. Meyer, didn’t really say anything negative. You could tell he was a little disappointed when Gabi came to tell him that she was “pregnant”. He still believed that Gabi could still make it through college with the responsibility of a child. Even with Gabi’s background, a family of teen pregnancy and some not even finishing high school let alone going to college, he believed in her. The one stated that there was no way she could be pregnant. That it wasn’t possible because Gabi wouldn’t be that stupid. One said “I rather be dead then pregnant.” During her project, she lost basically everyone. People had high hopes for her, and when she told them she was “pregnant” everyone was in such a disbelief. Nobody wanted anything to do with her, like they would catch an illness from her or something. The stereotypes were strong within her friends, the people who were supposed to be there for her where some of the worst to her. The stereotypes where strong in this movie. The use of Gabi’s background was very influential in this plot. People treated her in such a different way, if she didn’t have the background that they developed for her, people would have acted slightly different.
