For me as a newly qualified member of staff entering into an established team I found Anne’s high morals and consistency were the basis for her providing me with a positive role model. She believed best practice was the minimum and would always ensure every patient experienced the best care possible. IIies (et al.2012) believes that managers should be role models that their followers seek to emulate. A study by Hauck,Winsett and Kuric (2012) concluded that leadership can affect nurses ability to provide evidence based care. They advocate nursing leaders need to be role models and mentors to their staff. Without trust her ability to achieve positive outcomes for the unit and the team would not have been possible. The dictionary defines trust as the ability to rely on the integrity, strength or ability of a person or thing. These traits are very much mirrored within transformational leadership. Idealised influence recognises that respect is vital to building good relationships. Anne earned respect by treating the team as individuals and ensuring she knew what was important to us, was visible, accessible and encouraged open communication, something that is advocated in the literature (Marion 2015, Bennis 2014). By taking an interest in individual’s careers and ensuring access to courses, Anne ensured we felt valued and this in turn, created high levels of job satisfaction which resulted in excellent patient care. By encouraging professional development Anne was challenging us to grow and strengthen our clinical practice. Anne was very much involved in the day to day running of the unit and I feel this strengthened our trust in her as she was a very visible presence. However the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) (2009) would argue that the role of leadership within nursing lacks definition and this is creating conflict as nurse leaders are trying to balance several aspects of their role.
