The effect Imperialism had and still has today on Indochina is large. There were many positives, but lots and lots of negatives, when France first began to control the area. The effects are still present today, but almost all of them are positive. Imperialism began in Indochina, present day Vietnam, in 1848. During the time, Indochina,suffered, politically, economically, and socially. When first taken over, the French forced the Vietnamese to grow and and harvest crops and materials. They did not return much of the product, or the profit back to the native people. Instead, they took the goods back to France and sold them for their own profit. The French had no relationships with neighboring countries, which allowed them to make a major profit off of the Vietnamese goods. This was great for the French, but left the Indochinese economy to crumble. Eventually, they made enough crops for both economies to work and survive. After being take control of in the mid 1800’s , the Indochina social system faced consequences. Human rights were taken away, as the natives were almost put as slaves, while working for the French. The French government sent more than twenty men to take over and rule the government of Indochina. The emperors who were leading the country at the time, seemed to have control, but in reality had none. This led to a corrupt government, and riots and rebellions from the citizens. In nineteen forty six the Indochina war began, the native people fought to prevent France from gaining more control over them. The French had a stronger army, but they were weaker, due to World War II. This allowed the Vietnamese to win the war and gain independence from France in nineteen fifty four.
