“He who seeks rest finds boredom and he who seeks work finds rest.” Dylan Thomas was a talented poet with a troubled life. Like others with his passion, he turned his pain into poetry. His literature professor father and supportive family had a role to play in his success. He was considered the “Archetypal romantic poet of the popular American imagination”. His poetry was thought of as images that come together to form other images. (“Dylan Thomas” ) In his lifetime, Dylan Thomas wrote a collection of poems, plays, and an autobiography.
Dylan Marlais Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales on October 27, 1914. The name Dylan came from his father who that “son of the sea” would be the perfect name for his son. His mother thought he would get bullied and called “Dull one” so she changed the preoccupation to Dullan. His father David John Thomas was an English Literature professor and his mother Florence Hannah was a seamstress. He only had one sibling, which was his sister Nancy Marley who was nine years older. David and Florence spoke welsh but wanted their children to speak English. (“Dylan Thomas” )
Young Dylan had problems in school and those problems followed him into his teenage years. He only did well in his English and reading classes. At the time he was attending Mrs. Hole’s Dame school but once his father saw his grades were in danger he enrolled him in the single sex Swansea Grammar School where he worked. He is saying if the man is going to die he should at least go out with a bang. Lines16-19 the speaker finally tells who the poem is about his father. His father too is fighting death. “Clown in the moon” is another poem written by Dylan Thomas. It was written with his 1914- 1953 poems. In the first stanza the narrator describes the sadness he is feeling as quiet and gentle tears from a magic rose. He says he feels grief and its overcoming him. He also feels grief because he is afraid to dream of how his life would be on earth. In the second stanza he is saying that he feels as though the earth is in his reach but if he was to touch it the earth would crumble in his hand. (Thomas and Maldoon 25)
