Many readers are able to interpret what caused Dorian Gray’s downfall throughout the novel of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Some would say it was the influence of the character Lord Henry, however, I believe it to be the yellow book Lord Henry gives to Dorian as a gift. The book symbolizes the indirect branch of control that Lord Henry places over Dorian Gray.
Since the very beginning of Lord Henry and Dorian Gray’s relationship, Lord Henry has been influencing Dorian with his hedonistic insights. He first implants the idea that youth is the only important aspect in life, and soon this ideology begins Dorian obsessive desire to keep his beauty. After the death of Sibyl Vane, Lord Henry arrives at Dorian’s home and gives him the yellow book. Upon reading the book, Dorian sees aspects of his own life reflected back at him in the book. Oscar Wilde made some notable statements in the novel like the plain mention of the protagonist's lost beauty, which makes Dorian even more scared that he'll lose his youth. The difference between the book and his own life, however, is that the protagonist grows old and ugly whereas Dorian just remains young throughout his life. The book develops into a Holy Scripture for Dorian, who buys a dozen copies and revolves his life and actions on it. The yellow book soon becomes the backbone of Dorian's life. “For years Dorian Gray could not free himself from the influence of this book” (130). This line represents the profound and damaging influence that it has on Dorian, and foreshadows his downfall. This downfall occurs not because the book itself is corrupt but because Dorian allows the book to dominate and determine his actions
