The Patriot revolves around a French and Indian war veteran named Benjamin Martin whose wife has died. He tries to live peacefully on his plantation raising his children. However two of his sons, Gabriel Martin and Thomas Martin, want to join the continental army although their father doesn't want them to. Gabriel signed up to join the army without his father’s permission. Benjamin tires to stay out ot the conflict, but when Colonel Tavington finds out his son is part of the continental army, he burns the plantation down. He then tried to execute Gabriel, but when Thomas runs into stop them Thomas gets killed instead. Benjamin now wants to get revenge on Colonel Tavington and joins the Continental army with his son Gabriel. He puts his kids in the custody of …show more content…
With his son he went to a tavern to recruit some veterans he served with in the French and Indian war. After ambushing multiple British supply transports, including one holding the Colonel Tavington personal items, the tide of battle starts to change for them. However, the British were able to out smart them and during an ambush, the British ambushed the colonial army. After losing a large amount of troop Benjamin goes to bargain with General Cornwallis and gets his troops back by tricking him. After this they attack a british camp where Colonel Tavington was stationed at. Believing that they had won Gabriel went to kill Tavington only to be killed himself by tavington who faked his injury. Now being more upset than ever, Benjamin and his troops meet with the rest of the continental army to fight a massive battle. Towards the end of the battle he encounters Colonel Tavington and, although being nearly killed, was able to defeat and kill him in melee combat. Ties with their mother-country of Britannia, over three thousand miles away, resulted in miscommunication and arguments. Eventually these arguments and miscommunications lead to the Revolutionary War, provoking many American Colonists to join the Continental Army. Each soldier from the militia to the regular recruits had reasons to fight; many of these reasons were influenced by the first Age of Enlightenment and other reasons were formed by personal experiences with the conflicts of Britannia and the American Colonies. The movie, The Patriot, presented many reasons that are supported by major historical documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, and that also are backed by personal testimonies of the American Colonists who joined the Continental Army.

Throughout history, Americans have sought to spread the spirit of equality, which is believed to be the realization of true freedom. Before establishing this freedom, every American had only one question stuck in their head: What is freedom? Our country received it in the year of 1776 from the British through a series of difficulties and wars. African Americans defined it as an escape from slavery, while immigrants defined it as their acceptance into a new society. More yet, women of the women’s suffrage defined their freedom as their recognition into society and for their rights to be equal to that of every other man. These different perceptions of cultures/groups in America tied together to form an American view of freedom. Freedom is something that every American should be willing to do anything in order to maintain. We may have weapons of mass destruction, but when it comes to living in a peaceful, American lifestyle, our freedom is our greatest weapon.
1776, Book Review It was a good year for a revolution, 1776. But it didn't start off quite as well as the colonists would have liked. When George Washington agreed to take command of the American forces in 1775, he probably didn't realize what he was truly getting himself into. Washington took command of an army made up of old men and young boys that had either come from their farms or the streets. The army was short on weapons and gunpowder, lacked uniforms, and was racked by disease and drunkenness.

The book is divided into three chapters, giving the insight of many soldiers being divided by the border between the north and south. The repeal of the Stamp Act of 1765 with the mob action towards Andrew Oliver and Thomas Hutchinson, the Boston Massacre propaganda of 1770, and the resistance movement of the Boston Tea Party were all events that inspired radical views and revolutionary change. These events were backed and played through by the use of mobs especially like men of the Sons of Liberty. In the end, these men weren’t just “a rabble of boys”, “disorderly sailors”, or “miscreants” nor just a motley crew who was purely destructive and mindless. Rather they were men who acted for the betterment and survival of a people; patriots. These mobs help drive the resistance of the British from idea to movement toward greater change. In other words, these men steered America toward resistance and finally toward revolution.
David McCullough author of 1776 puts faces and feelings to the events of the Revolutionary war making this an exciting novel even when the ending is known. Acting as a companion to an earlier work of McCullough’s, John Adams, 1776 is a strictly military view of the era versus political. Although the reader may have to get accustomed to the vast amount of characters introduced McCullough makes sure that those you are supposed to remember you will. Every character introduced is described incredibly well and throughout the novel you begin to feel as if you know the character and are going through the battle with them, specifically General George Washington with whom the reader emphasizes constantly with throughout the war. With the great description of the characters and events we feel as if we are there and in doing this the author creates understanding, the reader by knowing all sides and characters’ personalities the feels they know why the Revolution happened the way it did.
