The past cannot be changed so let your past make you better not bitter. People that try to forget about their past are more likely to repeat the same mistakes than people that deals with their past. It is important to study the past because it allows people to understand the past, it compares their life with that of the people who lived in the world before them, and it helps people to learn from the mistakes that were made. The first reason why it’s important to study the past is that it allows people to understand the past. Understanding the past lets people know how it causes the present. In the book of Night, the author writes, “So heavy was my anguish that I made a vow: not to speak, not to touch upon the essential for at least ten years. This comparison lets people know that people in the past didn’t have the same opportunities as them. While I was reading this, I repeatedly compared my life with Elie. He only had one meal a day while I had three meals a day. He didn’t have a bathroom to use and he was forced to run for miles and miles. The only thing that stresses me out is school but for Elie, it was that he would either die today or live for another day. Finally, studying the past helps people to learn from the mistakes that were made. People feel guilty and regrets when they make mistakes. In the book, there was a time when Elie was in the hospital because of his foot surgery and instead of staying in the hospital, he left to go to the other camp because of the threats from SS officers. The SS officers werensaying that they were bombing the camp. This statement is proved in page 79 of Night which says, “I learned after the war the fate of those who had stayed behind in the hospital.
