The use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) is known to be used widely throughout sports, and many famous players have used them to aid them in their success. An example of that is at the time of the steroid era (1980s-2000s) in baseball, when many famous players like Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and many others used PEDs to hit a crazy amount of home runs that broke records (“The Steroid Era”). Some players feel as if they need to use them in order to earn a spot on the team because of how much an advantage doping is (Rosenberg). That being said, PEDs are illegal, and players who take them are penalized harshly (Rosenfeld). If players are willing to risk their health just playing, then taking PEDs is not that big of a deal (“The Only Good Reason to Ban Steroids in Baseball: To Prevent an Arms Race”). Also as PEDs get more advanced, they will become safer to take, and if they are legalized they can be tested in official facilities (“Should Pro Leagues Allow PEDs?”). Especially controversial is the objective penalties handed out by sporting officials and how people are tested for them (Smith; BBC-Ethics-Sporting Ethics: Types). Though they are banned, it is more of a common practice than people might think, and sports officials will probably never get rid of them completely (Rosenfeld). There will always be people who are more concerned about player health, though the effects of it are not entirely known, and those who want a more fun, entertaining, and fair game. In the end though, only one side can get their way, and for now, performance enhancing drugs are banned
