People in society strive to find happiness in ones self, others and their community. What factors are there to obtain ultimate happiness in one’s life? What ethical decisions does one have to overcome to obtain this supreme happiness that every individual endeavours? The citizens of Omelas have a difficult time achieving the goal of making the right ethical decision. In exchange for their ultimate happiness and success, is one child’s misery. In order to live their “perfect” lives the citizens of Omelas must accept the suffering of the child. To make the right ethical decision is difficult, but necessary to end the injustice of the society. Failing to overcome the ethical issues in the city of Omelas is displayed through three different characters in the story. There are those who choose to ignore the situation, those who observe the child in misery, and those who feel that they must walk away. In the story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” characters fail to overcome the ethical issues in their society, and the reader is taught the importance of moral responsibility and the implications of the difficult task to make the right ethical decision. In “ The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” the ones who choose to ignore and be ignorant are at fault for failing to overcome the proper ethical decision in the society of Omelas. It is expected of every citizen in Omelas to know that there is a child in misery for the people’s happiness. Those who are “content merely to know it is there” (Le Guin 971) are the ones who specifically choose to ignore the problem, and are content with living their perfect happy life knowing that a child is in misery in exchange for their happiness. Loosing the happiness that one gets in exchange from injustice in the world is an action that is unthinkable to humankind. The right ethical decision has to be made to entirely resolve the issue, but making that right ethical decision is impossible with the other factors of life such as personal happiness. In “The One Who Walks Away From Omelas” the reader is taught the importance of making the right ethical decision and can relate these morals in their own community. One cannot just choose to ignore, one cannot just choose to observe and still do nothing, and one cannot just simply walk away. The reader is taught the momentous moral of not being a bystander, the importance of moral responsibility, and the great significance in learning to overcome the ethical issues in society.
This child was unwillingly locked away in a tool room under one of Omelas’ buildings. It cried for help, “Please let me out. I will be good.”(5), but no one ever replies. It was feared and neglected by the public. They came to see it, but only to understand the reason for their happiness. People were stunned with anger of injustice at the sight of it. However, they compared “that [it] would be a good thing indeed; but if it were done. in that day and hour all prosperity and beauty and delight of Omelas would wither and be destroyed”(6). The article “Leaving Omelas: Questions of Faith and Understanding,” by Jerre Collins, draws attention to the fact that the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” by Ursula Le Guin, has not impacted Western thought despite its literary merit. Collins breaks his article down into three parts, the first explaining that he will “take this story as seriously as we are meant to take it” (525). Collins then goes over several highly descriptive sections of the story, which invite the reader to become part of the utopia that is Omelas. Collins states that when it comes to the state of the child and how it affects the citizens of Omelas the descriptions “may seem to be excessive and facetious” (527). But this is because Le Guin is using a
"Perhaps it would be best if you imagined it as your fancy bids, assuming it will rise to the occasion, for certainly I cannot suit you all." This is an open invitation for you, the reader, in the short story "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas." Ursula K. Le Guin is simply inviting you to become her main character. How might you accept or deny this malicious request? It is quite simple, really. To accept it is to read on, and to deny it is to disembark in the endeavor. The city of joy, your own Omelas, is developing continuously in your head. How sweet it is. The image of the bay surrounded by the mountains with Ursula's white-gold fire enchanting the air. Oh, and one cannot forget the tantalizing orgy custom fit to your most personal delights. Can you even begin to imagine the mere possibility of an association between religion and sexual pleasure without the possible deviance of human authority? It all seems nearly ovenvhelming. The fascination continues with every moment of lustful anticipation. One cannot deny their own perversion long enough to stop engaging in a plot that might encourage it. But there is a catch of course, for there is always a catch. This particular one is quite deviant really, for this city is a complete deception. It is a place of lamentation and punishment. It is a prison that simply provokes the archaic smiles described within the sentences. How best can one describe the goal of such a story? I believe I shall attempt to do so by describing the main character, you of course! You are presented with three stages and then you are given three questions. In the end, it will be your duty to determine the final event.
The city of Omelas is the most magical, idyllic place anyone’s imagination could possibly conjure. The people live happily, with everything they want and need, and most importantly without pain, evil, without monarchy, slavery, the stock exchange, the advertisement, the secret police and the bomb. Yet, the people are not simple minded, but rather are “mature, intelligent, passionate adults whose lives [are] not wretched” and “their children [are], in fact, happy”.
Ursula K. Le Guin uses her story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” to exhibit her disapproval of the utilitarianism seen in modern society by contrasting the contentment of the citizens of the fictitious utopian city, Omelas, with an account of the abused child in a closet in the cellar of one of the city’s buildings. The reader is shown how, in spite of Omelas’ utopian qualities, there are some of its citizens that exit the city, never to return. Those that walk away serve to express Le Guin’s own negative view on utilitarianism, and serves to compel the reader to contemplate whether or not they could tolerate a situation such as the one detailed.
Omelas begins amidst a festival in the seemingly utopian city of Omelas. People are in a holiday spirit on this day, as they are every other day in Omelas. Mirth and good cheer seems to be the moods of all of the citizens. Though blissful, these people are by no means ignorant: They were not simple folks, you see, though they were happy...They were not less complex than us. The seemingly perfect city offers something to please every taste: festivals, good-natured orgies, drugs that aren’t habit-forming, beer, and so on. The citizens of Omelas have a complete love of life. There is no war, no hunger, no strife; in short, Omelas seems like the pinnacle of perfection.
In the utopian city of Omelas, there is a small room underneath one of the buildings were a small unwanted child sits and is mistreated and slandered for existing. The child’s terrible existence allows the city to flourish and thrive with grace and beauty. Visitors come to view the miserable juvenile and say nothing, while others physically abuse the innocent child. The utopian society is aware of the child’s “abominable misery” (216), but simply do not care to acknowledge it. Le Guin states, “[T]o throw away the happiness of thousands for the chance of happiness of one: that would be to let guilt in the walls ... [T]here may not even be a kind word spoken to the child” (216). This means that since the child holds the responsibility of keeping the city beautiful, it has to go through the torture of neglect and separation from the outside

In doing this it creates this idea around Omelas as this happy, peaceful utopian society that seems wonderful to live in. There are no cars or advanced technology like central heating or washing machines but the people in Omelas are happy and live in comfort and they don’t base this happiness on technology or possessions like today's society. This is because they life on the principle of what the narrator says in par. 2 “Happiness is based on a just discrimination of what is necessary” but even though they people of Omelas follow this ideology, they still live a complex life like we do in our society. “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” challenges our country's economic style of government from capitalism to communism economics. This is shown in the “economy is not based on competition - so no stock markets or advertisements” (James's, 93) for products that they make. In Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” she writes about a child who is locked in a dungeon like room and how people come in and some kick the child so it will get up and how some people never go close to the child. Many of those people knew they had the choice of allowing an innocent child to suffer certain death or rid their selves of the comfort and leave their precious city of Omelas, there was some that stayed and then there was some that just left.
Ursula K. Guin’s story, “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” also shows a type of insanity, much less shown through actions. This short story is about a town where the happiness shown relies on the suffering of a small child. There is no happiness without pain is shown through this story in many ways.
In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” Guin uses characters as the main symbols. In this story the child locked in a cellar is the most important symbol. This locked away child is a symbol for a scapegoat. The child is a scapegoat for all the wrong and bad that happens in Omelas. Omelas is only a perfect utopia because all the blame is put on the child. “They all know that it has to be there. After reading the article by Baldick, I immediately thought of Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.” I was forced to read the story again having an open mind and the idea that everything has an alternative meaning. After doing so, I realized that it contains the same concept of abandonment and anger. In order to keep everything in Omelas prime and perfect one person has to be sacrificed. One child is kept in a broom closet in exchange for the splendor and happiness of Omelas. The people of Omelas know what is in the broom closet and, “they all understand that their happiness, the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of their children…depend wholly on this child’s abominable misery” (Le Guin 216). While “Omelas” has certainly received abundant literary and academic recognition, most critical studies of the story reduce the text to a one-dimensional moral parable warning against the evil of scapegoating and basing prosperity and happiness on the exploitation of others. This is because critics and non-critic audiences alike have predominantly read “Omelas” from a cultural lens that favors Protestant theodicy, which is still strong in American society. This theodicy presents the world in terms of binary oppositions, such as good and evil, happy and sad. Borrowing from this framework, critics have assigned moral value to the two types of Omelans featured in the story: the ones who stay and the ones who walk away, the latter making the morally and socially correct choice. Consequently, resulting scholarly analyses presume that goodness looks a certain way (some form of rejection or walking away from evil).
