Thanksgiving is a time where we can really evaluate ourselves and be thankful for what God has given us. “The Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving” by Edgar Albert Guest is a poem that makes me ponder about giving thanks and relates to the Bible.
“The Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving” was written by Edgar Albert Guest. Albert was a prolific English-born American poet. Edgar Albert was popular in the first half of the 20th century and became known as the People's Poet. He was born in August 20th, 1881 and died August 5th, 1959. “The Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving” was written to show the difference between what people used to do for Thanksgiving and what people do now. The theme of this poem is basically explaining how we are so different these days and don't do the normal tradition of actually taking the time to thank God. A line in the poem says that we have way too much fun and don't even think about praying. We feel as if we are to busy to think about God and thank Him. I also really like a line in the poem that says how the olden days were much better. Romans 12:2 says, Don’t become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants—what is good, pleasing, and perfect. Romans 12:2 greatly ties in with this poem because of the many key components. Back then everyone would gather around pray and really take a lot of time to be grateful, and to pause and give thanks for the everything we have. This verse connects to the poem because the poem says that we are basically conformed to the world. Romans 12:2 says not to be conformed to the world and not to be wordly.
