The curriculum has been invaluable to my profession as a nurse and the knowledge I have gained will go a long way in helping me achieve my career objectives. The curriculum and the entire academic journey have changed my perception of the nursing profession and especially my role as a palliative care nurse. The knowledge I have gained has led to a change of thinking regarding what my job taking care of terminally ill patients entails. The educational journey has equipped me with knowledge of how healthcare policies such as financial reimbursement affects the quality of care (Kirk & Jennings, 2014). I intend to use my knowledge of healthcare policies and regulations in my daily work, therefore, highlighting the acquired skills to my employer.
The role of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) in health care has been identified as a critical role in the goal to provide high-quality health care. APRNs have a bigger role to play in the health care system and it is important that students are provided with relevant and valuable knowledge as well as experience that improve their abilities. Healthcare is a continuous emerging industry across the world. With our ever changing life styles and the increased levels of pollution across the world more and more people are suffering from various health issues. Nursing is an extremely diverse profession and among the highest educated with several levels ranging from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to a registered nurse (RN) on up to a Doctorate in Nursing. Diane Viens (2003) states that ‘The NP is a critical member of the workforce to assume the leadership roles within practice, education, research, health systems, and health policy’.
Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience thus far including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and related values, and my visions for the future.
The nursing process is one of the most fundamental yet crucial aspects of the nursing profession. It guides patient care in a manner that creates an effective, safe, and health promoting process. The purpose and focus of this assessment paper is to detail the core aspects of the nursing process and creating nursing diagnoses for patients in a formal paper. The nursing process allows nurses to identify a patient’s health status, their current health problems, and also identify any potential health risks the patient may have. The nursing process is a broad assessment tool that can be applied to every patient but results in an individualized care plan tailored to the most important needs of the patient. The nurse can then implement this outcome oriented care plan and then evaluate and modify it to fit the patient’s progress (Taylor, C. R., Lillis, C., LeMone, P., & Lynn, P., 2011). The nursing process prioritizes care, creates safety checks so that essential assessments are not missing, and creates an organized routine, allowing nurses to be both efficient and responsible.
What led me to nursing in the beginning was having a passion for people. I love the holistic approach and level of care that nurses bring to the literal bedside table. I knew throughout nursing school that I wanted to advance my education further than bedside nursing. I debated on whether to pursue a master’s degree in nursing and just become a nurse practitioner, but ultimately, I knew I wanted to advance my education even further to help make and promote changes in healthcare. By choosing to become a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner, I hope to change the stigma that is attached with being “just a nurse” and show that nurses play a vital role in redesigning
Nursing is not only a career, but a way to give back to the community by enhancing and maintaining the health of other individuals. Throughout my clinical experiences last year, I witnessed kindness and selflessness among many nurses that have impacted and helped shape my future career choices and life immensely. The goal that I have set to achieve over the next five years is to become a registered nurse working in a ward at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. This is something I am passionate about doing and have allowed myself five years to complete this goal because first, I require three years to complete my nursing degree, and then have allowed myself two additional years to gain the experience and specialised skills required to move into this position. There are numerous skills that I must acquire to work as a registered nurse. For example, I must be able to; develop individualized patient care, collaborate with a multidisciplinary health teams (Kourkouta, & Papathanasiou, 2014), practice both safely and ethically, critically think, manage heavy workloads, and perform clinical skills (DeWit & O’Neil, 2013). Currently, I have minimal knowledge on these nurse specific skill sets. However, by engaging in the bachelor of nursing degree and placement opportunities offered, I will be able to develop these skills as well as enhance my own skills of communication and memorisation to aid in my career in nursing. In addition to this, I plan to seek additional work experience and volunteer at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital because it will give me exposure to the communication between health teams as well as connections to critically thinking nurses and future employers. Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way.
