Circle III: Gluttons In Dante’s Inferno, Purgatory is split into nine different circles of hell. Within these nine circles, there are the souls of those deceased. Each circle has a corresponding punishment to go along with the appropriate sin that an individual has committed whilst on earth. The nine circles of hell are Virtuous Pagans, Lustful, Gluttons, Prodigal and Miserly, Wrathful, Arch-Heretics, Violent, Fraud, and Treacherous. In particular the Gluttons have a very fitting punishment where they are mired in mud while continuously being hit by hail, rain, and snow. The punishment is suitable for the gluttonous. When Dante and Virgil first enter the third circle of Hell, Cerberus, who guards the circle, greets them by showing them his fangs. Cerberus tears at and mangles the spirits in the circle. He feels great pity towards Ciacco and does not even recognize him at first. As seen in this quote, “I said: “The pain you suffer here perhaps disfigures you beyond recognition: I can’t remember seeing you before. But tell me who you are, assigned to grieve in this sad place, afflicted by such torture that –worse there well may be, but none more foul” (Alighieri 6.411), Dante shows sympathy for Ciacco even before he realizes it is someone he knew. Ciacco asks for Dante to make his name famous in the world of the living and to remind his friends of him. After his request, he no longer talks but becomes mute and then joins the other sinners. Dante seems to have a good meeting with Ciacco but becomes saddened again when he asks Virgil what will happen to his soul.
