Imperialism Reflection Europe was the powerhouse when it came to imperialism. Europeans truly believed they had the right and duty to control other countries. The imperialism throughout the world was a period of colonial expansion. By the end of the Imperialism period, Europe colonized countries around the entire world. Most often, the colonies did not approve of Europe colonizing their country. Imperialism caused a devastating setback in humanity and its effects are shown throughout the world. Imperialism is the act of a strong nation seizing a less powerful nation and ultimately controlling all of the nation’s responsibilities: economical, political, and social. The industrial revolution sparked the beginning of imperialism in Europe.
The major negative effect from Imperialism was a huge step back in humanity. The rise of imperialism caused a higher need for labor. The desperate desire for land, capital, and labor caused the Europeans to turn to slavery. Europeans began enslaving Africans in a cruel manner. Slaves were forced to do unnecessary labor for the Europeans under cruel conditions. Slaves were chained up and packed tightly in crowded ships. Several slaves died in these harsh conditions, but the few who survived usually were treated just as poorly at their destination. Slaves were forced to do all of the harsh labor that nobody was willing to do. The inhumane treatments of Africans were sparked by the racist feelings toward Africans. Europeans truly believed they were superior to Africans; even the Oxford dictionary had a negative definition of the word “black.” Joseph Kipling’s poem, White Man’s Burden reveals the heart breaking feelings Europeans had toward Africans. It refers to Africans solely being a burden to white men. African’s culture and religion was even impacted by the Europeans. All of these countries would have produced a more diverse in culture world. There could have been a lot more violence between these countries as well. Imperialism also resulted in an increase in education and hospitals. The increase in education benefits the world as a whole. When the population is more educated, the world operate much more smoothly. The increase in hospitals benefits the entire population as well; everyone is in need of a hospital at some point in their life. The increased availability of hospitals increases the standard of living for the population. The increased in education and hospitals also led to an increase in sanitation. All of these advancements resulted in economic growth. Imperialism also had its negative effects. The major negative effect is assimilation and slavery.
