In the novel, East of Eden, by John Steinbeck,the author portrays the character, Cathy, as a murderous, secretive, devil-like person. Every since the author introduced Cathy, she was described as a monster that was brought into the world and a human that was possessed by the devil, and continues to be manipulative monster throughout the whole story. Adam doesn't realize that she is a horrendous person, but others can see it in her eyes immediately. As soon as Samuel meet Cathy, he had a feeling that she had something concealed. Samuel saw something in her eyes, “The eyes of Cathy had no message, no communication of any kind. There was nothing recognizable behind them. They were not human eyes”(73). In this quote, Samuel saw himself when he was in London, scared and confused why this golden haired man was about to be killed. There was something about this man that caught his attention. The look of him was faceless. He had nothing in his eyes, they were blank, a look that a human could not give. His father then explained why this man is being killed and how he is a dangerous person. The picture was clear, Samuel sees Cathy as a evil indescribable human being. A look full of hatred, “It was the eyes, of course, Samuel thought. Only twice in my life have I seen eyes like that- not like human eyes...why is a look evil then? maybe such a look may have been trouble again-ever”(179).
