An unfair disadvantage is created from the start for low-income families in terms of education when compared to financially stable families. This struggle further exacerbated for those who fall into the range of being a ‘model minority’ such as those who are of Asian descent. This struggle comes from how Asians have a stereotype into being high-achieving, successful, more financially stable, and other such things that put consciously or unconsciously puts them above others in many people across America. This creates a problem in which those who do not live up to that ‘model minority’ status feel as if they are failures and others who believe in the stereotypes also display negative feelings towards them. This is why the issue is so prevalent within Asian communities, as one cannot attempt to fix a problem in which people are not aware of. This unawareness can be seen in Rosalind S. Chou and Joe R. Feagin’s “Myth of the Model Minority: Asian Americans Facing Racism”, in which they say that “Lacking in the media discussion was an analysis of the ways in which media stereotypes of Asian American students as “model minorities” could facilitate a lack of cultural understanding in this particular school environment…whites have historically used Asian Americans and their “model minority” status to shame and blame other people of color for economic and educational inequality” (Chou and Feagin 57). Showing that not only is the topic of model minorities not discussed within media as a whole, but how it affects the understanding of Asian Americans and the struggles they go through. This text also states how many Americans used the idea of the model minority in order to put down other people of color for their poverty and inequality while blaming them. This can create animosity between Asian Americans and other people of color as they can have anger towards those who are perceived better by the community despite the stereotype not being their fault. Historically due to the model minority perception, Asian Americans are more likely to be considered in a similar category to that of Caucasians and are treated differently than that of other minority groups. This can be seen in Bob H. Suzuki’s “Revisiting the Model Minority Stereotype: Implications for Student Affairs Practice and Higher Education”, in which he states that “Asian Americans were initially not included as a protected minority group under federal affirmative action regulations. Moreover, government agencies and nonprofit organizations were not inclined to fund programs for Asian Americans in need of assistance because of the perception that the Asian communities had few, if any, problems, were self-sufficient, and “took care of their own” (Suzuki 22). Emphasizing how Asian Americans, despite being in need of financial or governmental assistance, would be denied the help they need because of the model minority perception. This creates an issue in which those who are part of the Asian American community in low-income families are unable to further their education using the same help that other minorities get by the government.
