What would it be like to have a twin? This is a question people often ponder. People often say that they see someone that resembles someone they already know. It is almost like dejavu. “Twin” comes from the German word “twine” meaning “two together” (Nagy 1). Most people automatically think of two people who look just alike when they hear the word “twin”. However, there is a lot more to twins than just looking alike. Twins are the most common type of multiple births. Many think there are only two types of twins, identical and fraternal; they often leave out conjoined twins. Twins are very unique and fascinating individuals because of their similarities biologically, physically, and psychologically.

The article I read is about Siamese twins or better known as conjoined twins. Conjoined twins form after the second week of conception, identical twins form before the first two weeks of conception. When a monozygote splits after the first two weeks of conception it doesn’t separate completely, and that’s how you end up with a conjoined twin. The conjoined twins will always be the same sex, because they came from the same egg. The twins will have to share the same placenta, amniotic sack, and there will only be one chorionic sac. Depending on what stage the monozygote separates will determine where the twins will be conjoined at.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, births of conjoined twins occur only once out of every 200, 000 births. Twins become conjoined when an embryo starts to divide but fails to complete the process. While the twins become a single entity, they are considered separate individuals. However, most conjoined twins do not survive after birth and when they do they tend to have problems with malformed organs that are shared. The research by the University of Maryland Medical Center concludes that the overall survival rate of these conjoined twins is somewhere between 5 and 25 percent. With that being said, conjoined twins are often viewed as curiosities and a rare occurrence in our society in general.
My brothers and sister are the best motivation to me. It is not every day that we get along but when we do then it is a good day. Every day they make me want do better, not only for myself but for my mom and them also. They encourage me to do better now so that my future is bright later on. Family is always the best to have on your team especially for their support because they genuinely mean it and you know that it is coming from their heart. I know I can count on all my brothers and sister to be there for me when no one else is because they are family. I hate that they are growing every day and getting older to experience the real life. I hope even later on they will all still support me and we will not drift apart like I know
