A Signifier, Signified Hawthorne's parable, The Minister's Black Veil, has an aspect that creates a lot of controversy over its meaning. The veil being this aspect. The story also causes people to think on who was in the right or wrong, whether it be the minister or the townspeople around him. Another hot topic in this parable is directed at the wife. Some say she was right to leave the minister, and some say she was wrong. All three of these are conclusions from one story, that never gave an explanation for these things. First, we have the question of why the minister wore the veil and what it meant. In the doctrine of Original Sin, it states that every single person is born a sinner, and the only way to salvation is by acknowledging that sin. "I look around me, and, lo! On every visage a Black Veil!" ( pg 24 ). This could explain why the minister would do such an eye catching thing. The veil has no physical meaning, but more of a meaning that signifies another thing. It signifies that everyone is hiding behind their own mask, used to hide their own sins. Going by the majority rule, the minister was in the wrong by being the sole one to wear a veil. If you go by the formerly present theory – the doctrine of Original Sin – then the minister was in the right, since he acknowledged his own sins. The reason why the townspeople reacted so negatively towards the minister is not because he looked like a nut, randomly wearing a black veil around, but because he was right to do so. "His converts always regarded him with a dread peculiar to themselves, affirming, though but figuratively, that, before he brought them to celestial light, they had been with him behind the black veil" ( pg 21 ).
