The middle Class The middle class occupies a position between the upper class and lower class; especially: the socio-economic group, composed mainly of business and professionals, bureaucrats and some skilled workers who share the same social interests and values. It is composed of people who have similar incomes, education and similar tastes. The middle class is currently constituted by professionals who have achieved more than a high School diploma or a technician. Since today there is a greater demand for jobs that require persons having a study level higher. Fast-food companies have made a great effort to offer a healthier menu variety so that the final consumer has a better diet; but you 've been a bit difficult to change the preference of the customer because they have extensive experience eating this type of food. The problem with the middle class is that most people think they belong in the middle class because they do not want to associate themselves with neither rich nor poor; there are stigmas attached to each side of the spectrum.

There are four categories of class in contemporary American society: upper, middle, working and lower. Of these four categories of classes, two are subdivide. These two are: upper class and the middle class. These are then divided into: upper-upper class, lower-upper class, upper-middle class and lower-middle class (W.W. Norton, Co.).
What comes into my mind when thinking on how to categorize those people that belong in the middle class, I look at such things as education, race, family, income, gender and how many people are in your household. I look at it as those people who are making between $40,000 and about $85,000 to be in the middle class while the next step would be the upper middle class and then to the upper class. Maybe I am wrong here, but like I said before, everyone wants to have that “I am middle class” attitude. The most recent Census Bureau survey data shows that the share of households with incomes of $75,000 or more has doubled in the past 24 years. Other studies, however, discover that more people who depart the middle class move down than up, at least temporarily.
And I’m quite confident, that most of us, here at Harper College, label ourselves as middle class. Now, in order to dive into further discussion, let’s try to define American middle class. In his movie, R. Reich states, that there is no official definition of middle class. He states that the median salary in the US is around 50,000 dollars (data used in movie is from year 2012). American pay more in fast food than one does on entrainment like movies, books, and music combined. In 1970, The United States spend around $6 billion on fast food and by the end of 2011 the amount was nearly doubled to $110 billion. Fast food is now found all over the places like hospitals, airports, and zoos. “What We Eat”, wrote by Eric Schlosser reflects on his research on the far-reaching effects of the American life. “What We Eat,” is a look into the rapid increase and popularity in fast food for the American people along with the physical and social consequence of the rapidly growth of the service economy.
Take a second to understand why fast food firms choose to sell products that are unhealthy. Their unhealthy products are in a high demand in the food market; in fact, they are simply giving us what we demand for. Most firms have started putting food labels on their menus so there is no room for excuse when making the right food choices. Nobody is forcing us to eat a whole box of Krispy crème donuts or a super-size meal at McDonalds. I believe that we are always looking for shortcuts in life and now we can anticipate there is a shortcut in what we put into our bodies. So we are consistently after things that are cheap, fast and affordable. Who better to attend to our needs than the fast food industry?
Nevertheless, some people insist that fast foods, such as chips, hamburgers and fizzy drinks, that are so cheap and tasty, are not a consequence of the health problems. However, I strongly disagree that fast food has no bad impact on people’s health. I believe that fast food has a negative impact on society and, therefore, people must take care of themselves and lead a healthy lifestyle if they do not want to face serious problems with their
People are either rich or they are just making it by. There seems to be no middle class. In the article “Keeping the Dream Alive” by Time “In 2010, the White House Task Force on the Middle Class reported, "It is more difficult now than in the past for many people to achieve middle-class status because prices for certain key goods — health care, college and housing — have gone up faster than income" (Amadeo “End of the...”). Wealth is used to show how high you are in the social class. Most people are below the middle class and there is barely anyone in it.
The idea of class has been here since the beginning of human existed. We categorize ourselves as such base off the amount of money we make and own. I would be considered middle class, someone who has a shelter and can provide for himself in a healthy matter. I am always striving to become wealthy just like anyone else. But what is middle class to me?
Birdsall, Graham, and Pettinato states that middle class is “the backbone of both the market economy and of democracy in most advanced societies” (Banerjee and Duflo 3). Everyone has freedom to decide what they do, where they live, and who they get married. However, there is an aspect that people are fell into when they are born, social classes. The social hierarchy of America consists of three classes, they are upper, middle, and lower class. The vast majority of Americans fall into the category of the middle class. Because of their buying power, the middle class greatly influences the American economic system. The term middle class gets thrown around too much and it is time that a more concrete definition is introduced.
So, my question to you, what constitutes middle class? How does a person know he or she is middle class?
