The Meaning of the Symbols in Young Goodman Brown

"Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a story set in Salem, Massachusetts around the time of the Salem witch trials. Hawthorne weaves a tale of a young man whose world is turned upside down after a trip in the woods with the devil. Although he manages to rebuke the devil, and even though he doesn't know if what happened was real or a dream, what he learns in the forest that night changes his whole perception of religion and life itself. He comes to realize that his ancestors, his wife, the church elders and most of the town are under the influence of the devil. All these upright citizens, the moral leaders of Salem, who praised God in the light of day would then go and praise the devil in the woods at night. Through symbolism and religious imagery Hawthorne shows the hypocrisy of organized religion and mans inability to avoid sin.

The most obvious use of symbolism in the story is Goodman's wife. Hawthorne names her Faith so that when Goodman talks about her it seems as if he is speaking of his faith in God. When he says "My love and my Faith, of all nights of the year, this one night I must tarry away from thee." at the beginning of the story Goodman is not only saying goodbye to his wife, he also is foreshadowing his evil meeting that night and his loss of Faith in God. Later, when he is late meeting the devil, he says "Faith kept me back awhile", as if his trust in God made it hard for him to show up. When Goodman sees his wife going with the rest of the townspeople to worship the devil he cries "My Faith is gone!" All of Goodman Brown's faith in God is based on his Faith in other people, most importantly his wife. When Goodman Brown feels he is losing his wife to the devil he also feels he is losing his Faith in God. This shows the hypocrisy of organized religion where people put their religious faith in others instead of in God. When Goodman sees that the good, religious townspeople, including his wife, are actually worshiping the devil he loses all his faith because his faith was in them instead of in God.

Hawthorne also uses colors symbolically in the story. Faith wears a pink ribbon in her hair. Pink can be seen as a symbol of purity and innocence, which describes Goodman's wife faith.
