Unlocking Mysteries: A Review of The Maze Runner

For my book report I read a dystopian fiction called The Maze Runner by James Dashner. The main character is a teenage genius, wiped of all his memories, named Thomas. The tall lanky boy is put in a whole new civilization with no important memories of the world, his family, or even his purpose in the dreaded place. The book begins with Thomas waking up in a small cold elevator to find a group of boys staring at him. As he begins to adjust to his new life on the second day a surprise arrives in the elevator. A girl… in a coma. The note that arrives with her is just as menacing “This is the last one.” That’s when things go haywire. Let’s start with the maze. Everyday at the same time the walls to the maze open and the runners go through it to map this ever changing structure. Every Night, when the walls close the grievers come out. That’s right grievers. They’re pretty much big slugs of blubber held together by slime and spikes that can cause serious injuries. Well it the span of his first week Thomas survives a night in the maze trying to save his peer, befriends the boy that came before him,(Chuck) and figures out he can telepathically communicate with the girl in the coma who does wake up. To start off the weekly supplies don’t arrive at all. The sky no longer turns blue but stays a dull grey 24/7. And to top it all off the walls stop closing. Thomas with the help of Chuck and Theresa finds a cliff in the maze that he sees grievers jump off and disappear through some sort of door outside of the maze. He also finds a pattern in the constantly changing maze. A series of words, FLOAT, CATCH, BLEED, DEATH, STIFF, and PUSH. He can’t seem to figure out what it means but memorizes them just in case.
