The movie The Matrix and the novel 1984 by George Orwell are both set under a Dystopian social background. Despite the five decades time difference between the publication of the book and the movie, the Dystopian societies depicted in both works remain much the same, especially in respects of control, technology and human nature. As it is shown in The Matrix and 1984, a totalitarian power maintains its power by exercising absolute control over its citizens, both physically and mentally. In 1984, the Party sets up telescreens and microphones to monitor the physical behavior of the citizens. The Matrix, on the other hand, creates agents to keep close watch on humans. The ruled ones are restrained in a certain area as their minds are blocked in a specific space. The ruling power creates fake history because it understands that ‘who controls the past controls the future’ (1.4.12). Citizens in both works are cheated to believe that what they are experiencing is correct and reality. To exercise an absolute control in all aspects of citizens, from their body to their mind, technology is used as an effective tool in both cases. In the 1984, the crowded level of the jail tells that there will always be people seeking truth and solutions to their doubts even that might lead to their deaths. ‘Crimestop’ also reveals that the Party controls ‘extra’ thought of citizens by hiding them not eliminating them. In the Matrix, Neo, as a representative of living humans, also doubts the world he lives in and searches for an answer.
