'The Master Speed' by Robert Frost
Throughout the poem The Master Speed, Frost addresses the idea that marriage is a sacred bond that must be treasured all through our lives. The main reason for the apparent matrimony theme was due to the engagement of Frost's daughter. Because of this great influence over his life, Frost reiterated the advice to his daughter to stay at 'the master speed'; in order to fully enjoy the rest of her life as well as her future commitment. “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words,” Robert Frost once said. As is made fairly obvious by this quote, Frost was an adroit thinker. It seems like he spent much of his life thinking about the little things. He often pondered the meaning and symbolism of things he found in nature. Many readers find Robert Frost’s poems to be straightforward, yet his work contains deeper layers of complexity beneath the surface. His poems are not what they seem to be at first glance. These deeper layers of complexity can be clearly seen in his poems “The Road Not Taken”, “Fire and Ice”, and “Birches”.
The poem Fire and Ice is nine line long and is an example of a briefly ironic literary style of Frosts work. Fire and Ice ranges between two meter lengths. The poem uses interwoven rhymes founded on “ire,” “ice,” and “ate.” Although the meter is irregular it does keep up an iambic foot throughout the poem. The first line of the poem is a tetrameter followed by a dimeter which is followed by five line of tetrameter, ending with two lines of dimeter. The division of the line lengths is to render natural interruptions in the poem causing the reader to stop and reread what they have just read in order to comprehend the meaning of the lines containing the dimeter. For example when the reader reads “ Some say in ice” they go back to the first line of the poem to reread the topic of what some are saying about the end of the world. The rhyme scheme of “Fire and Ice” is ABAABCBCB style. The words “fire” and “ice” are being rhymed with themselves. By using this scheme it means that the poem falls soundly and flows. The most powerful motivation is greed and it only can be stopped with proper mediators but they must not become too excited and act foolish or their cause will become too big to consume. Great ideas for good causes take time, and warnings must be kept in mind, no matter how much the plan is needed to happen. Even though the world of a dystopian society is absolutely horrible, no government is ever overthrown easily. The exempt people of such societies, who call themselves leaders, lead lives of too much decadence as they can as they choose the lives of others. In “Burning Bright,” part three of Fahrenheit 451, Beatty says, “Old Montag wanted to fly near the sun and now that he’s burnt his damn wings, he wonders why.” This allusion demonstrates that Guy Montag and Kurt Vonnegut’s title character “Harrison Bergeron” both suffered like Icarus because they failed to heed warnings.
Frost’s sentence structure is long and complicated. Many meanings of his poems are not revealed to the reader through first glance, but only after close introspection of the poem. The true meanings contained in Frost’s poems, are usually lessons on life. Frost uses symbolism of nature and incorporates that symbolism into everyday life situations. The speaker in the poems vary, in the poem “The Pasture”, Frost seems to be directly involved in the poem, where as in the poem “While in the Rose Pogonias”, he is a detached observer, viewing and talking about the world’s beauty. Subsequently, the author transfers that beauty over to the beauty of experiences that are achieved through everyday life.
In the poem “For Once, Then, Something,” the speaker recalls a time when he had encountered something in a well, and his uncertainty about the something at the bottom of the well led to his desire to have his knowledge confirmed. Frost’s choices of words, images, diction, and tone in the narrative poem “For Once, Then, Something” reflects the uncertainty of the speaker. Through Frost’s diction, imagery, and allusions, the speaker seeks the truth and clarity of knowledge that creates tones of wistfulness and desire.

Since Robert Frost does not use a rhyme scheme in “The Gift Outright”, it is necessary to provide some form of continuity for the sake of readability in the form of poetry. In other words, iambic pentameter allows structure into the poem. On the other hand, the lack of a rhyme scheme is also significant in defining the potential of young America. Frost usually implants important ideas into the last lines of his poems, and the last line of this poem reads, “Such as she was, such as she would become” (Frost 16). This line resonates with an inner potential for America. It resonates with America’s ability to be molded, and this is the same idea infused by the lack of a rhyme scheme. Rhyme schemes provide poems with a definite pattern; if a rhyme scheme is excluded, there remains a lack of pattern and a sense of unknowing. This unknowing feeling is the same as potential. Frost’s use of comparisons helps the reader to better interpret the meaning of this poem. The picture created, with his use of imagery allows the reader to view his work from various perspectives. His analogies are very pragmatic. The reader is able to relate to the speaker’s feelings. After reading this poem it gives the reader a sense of understanding why the speaker wished he could go back to his past so much.

It follows the wild cries of joy and pain down the wind, through the hedgerow, growing ever fainter. What was that sound? A dog barking far off? That was our life calling to us, the one that was vigorous and undefended and curious.”
Frost uses nature as a reflection of human experiences; just like humanity it can have seasons and life cycles. He uses different scenes to depict a certain mood for readers to step into the psychological happening of a man. The idea of how seasons change, Frost compares it through the life cycles that humans encounter. Contrary to popular opinion, I believe that nature is not Frost’s central theme in his poetry; it is about the relationship that man has with nature in which can be seen from “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, “The Road Not Taken”, and “An Old Man’s Winter Night.”
Perhaps one of the most well-known poems in modern America is a work by Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken. This poem consists of four stanzas that depict the story of the narrator traveling through the woods early in the morning and coming upon a fork in the path, where he milled about for a while before deciding upon one of the two paths, wishing he could take both, but knowing otherwise, seeing himself telling of this experience in the future.
