Should the lottery system be required to offer a financial literacy course before giving winner’s their money? Many Americans would say “No”, arguing that it is a matter of personal choice as to whether a lottery winner seeks out financial advice concerning their newfound wealth. However, this personal choice could lead to catastrophic consequences without proper financial help, such as bankruptcy. To prevent bankruptcy, which causes unhappiness and depression, lottery winners should be required to take a financial literacy course or to meet with a financial advisor before receiving their winnings. The lottery system has been giving money away to winners for decades without providing them any financial help. According to Don McNay, a financial advisor who has several lottery-winning clients, approximately 90 percent of lottery winners blow the money they’ve won within 5 years (Morrison). This often leads to lottery winners filing for bankruptcy. The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards reports that approximately 1 in 3 lottery winners will declare bankruptcy, making them in a worse place than they were before winning the lottery (Edelman). Worse yet, more lottery winners have gotten divorced, become estranged from loved ones, been depressed, abused alcohol/drugs, and committed suicide at a higher rate than the average American (Edelman). Clearly, lottery winners are not happy, despite winning a massive amount of money. This can be traced back to their lack of knowledge as to how to manage their finances. With proper financial advice, these winners could avoid bankruptcy and other life-crippling disasters, giving them happiness in their newfound
